Tavis Elzy’s steal and layup with 50 seconds to play was the go-ahead basket for Collins in its 55-52 victory over Covington Holy Cross in boys’ basketball action Saturday night.

Larz Hall added a put-back and Elzy hit two more free throws before Holy Cross’ Jake Burger hit two foul shots, then missed the potential game-tying shot at the buzzer as the Titans (4-3) remained unbeaten at home in the early season.

“Sometimes when you play a tight game like that you have to find a way to win, and our guys were able to do that tonight,” said Collins Coach Curtis Turley, who moved into a tie for 12th on the state career victories list with his 610th win.

Sophomore forward Dwayne “Dez” Marshall scored 13 points to lead four in double figures for Collins. Junior forward Michael Brooks added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Elzy and Hall added 10 points apiece.

Burger scored 18 points to lead Holy Cross (3-2), which shot 45 percent (18 for 40) from the field, but only 18.8 percent (3 for 16) from 3-point range and 59.1 percent (13 of 22) from the free throw line.

Meanwhile the Titans shot 47.1 percent (24 for 51) from the field, including 2 of 8 (25 percent) from 3-point range, and missing 7 of 12 free throws (41.7 percent).

The Collins Invitational begins Monday. In the first game two Louisville teams, Southern and Valley, meet at 6 p.m. with the Titans taking on Doctors Charter school from Miami, Fla. at 7:30 p.m.

In Saturday’s other games, the Collins girls’ basketball team lost 49-47 to Mercer County in the Lady Dragon Hoop Fest at South Oldham. The Titans will play there again Monday.

Meanwhile the Shelby County boys’ basketball team fell to Paul Dunbar 77-58 in the first round of the Fayette County Invitational. The Rockets will next take on Louisville Butler at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Bryan Station High School.
