CARROLLTON – Relentless hitting and defense carried Shelby County past Grant County, 8-6, Thursday night to the 8th Region championship and a return trip to the state tournament in Owensboro.

“Hitting came through,” Rockets Coach Kelly Cable said. “And just total determination and desire and want from the entire team.”

After the Braves went ahead, 4-3, in the bottom fourth on Madison Goderwis’ RBI single, Shelby answered with a 3-run rally in the top of the fifth, led by Hannah Stucker’s 2-run double to the center-field fence.

In their next at-bat, the Rockets added some insurance runs when Hannah Abbott singled in Becca Mouser, and after a double Sarah Lopesilvero, Sara Chambers’ sacrifice fly brought home Abbott to make 8-4.

The Rockets had to fight through some emotional low points before their comeback.

:” It was really intense,” Abbott said. “It wasn’t just a fight out here. It was a fight within ourselves.”

Grant County, which had upset 2-time defending champion Anderson County in the semifinals, wasn’t ready to go home, though.

They continued connect against Shelby’s Jeneca Thomas, but SCHS’s defense helped turn back the Braves’ rallies in both the sixth and the seventh innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Morgan McClure walked and moved up on a bunt single Goderwis. She went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch by Thomas.

With Goderwis at second, Samantha Perry hit the ball in front of the plate. Catcher Abbott fielded and threw to first for the out and then took the return throw Chambers to nail Goderwis.

With two on in the seventh, Grant’s Katelyn Roy singled home a run to make it 8-6. After Dee Dee Davis snagged a pop fly for the second out, McClure had a chance to drive in the tying runs.

She singled to center field, where Taylor Shaw charged, scooped up the ball and fired home to Abbott, who held on in a collision to end the game.

“Did she bounce or anything?” Abbott said jokingly after the game. “I couldn’t tell. I got kicked in the face.”
