Turnover laden game.First round jitters and a lot of walking calls attributed to most of those. Substitution patterns were questionable at best for both teams. Stevie Rogers goes out with potential concussion..pray for her complete recovery. Both teams played extremely hard. Sammy King came out strong in the first half. She disappeared in the second half. McFarland was a bear inside when Thomas was not guarding her. Slone played her usual great floor game but still had some unforced turnovers.
Powell has a bright future if they can find some team cohesion. Need to upgrade schedule so that they can be tournament tested. Knott had played two tough recent games at LCC within the month and I believe that to be a major difference. Good luck to KCC against PCC on Friday!

Listened to the entire game on radio...an outstanding game...Congrats KCC

Listening to it on the radio it sounded like turnovers killed Powell. They had a 6 point lead in the 3rd quarter and turned the ball over about 5 straight times without getting a shot off, while Knott scored on the other end. Powell radio announcers said their top scorer, Stevie Rogers, had been sick all day with the "stomach flu", and was about half speed. Then she fell and received a concussion with over 1 minute in the game and Powell trailing by 2, and didn't return to the game. Powell was down 3 with about 30 seconds left and didn't get a shot off, throwing it away trying to get it inside to McFarland.
Powell had a good year, finishing at 21-6. If I were them with the great middle school team they have (at many times last night they had three 8th graders in the game), I would expand my schedule out into the Bluegrass area and play some of the schools in Fayette County and surrounding counties. They're a short drive from most of those schools anyway. Lexington is just 40 miles away. Plus make sure they play the usual 14th powers every year too. With a schedule like Lexington Christian, Lexington Catholic, Dunbar, Madison Central, Montgomery, GRC, etc, then 14th region Letcher Central, Knott Central, Perry Central, Breathitt County, etc, you have to get better. And for sure more tougher,
Heck, they have an enrollment of 730 students. That's 3rd largest in the 14th region. They should be able to compete with the "big" schools. And become more tourney ready in March.

I think it is time that the PC administrators really take a look at their head coach. True, he has a hsitory of coaching other teams, but he has failed miserably with the PC girls simply by not using valuable talent. There are several 8th graders who are well qualified to start on this year's team, but instead he has chosen to sit them on the bench and not allow them to help their team prosper. Granted, they have won several games this year, but look who they played to get a successful record. You parents and supporters need to band together and get something done before you loose some of the stellar talent you have coming up from the 8th grade. If you do so, great things could be in your future...if not...well it's in your hands.
It's time for a coaching change at Powell County High School.

If you look at the schedule, powell did play knott, letcher, breathitt, and jbs, all among the top teams in the 14th. also if you watched pc, you know that the 8th graders he has probably got more playing time than any other varsity team in the state. And a lot of teams would be glad to go 21-6 and win their district championship.

Congratulations to Powell County on a successful season and best of luck to Knott in the semi-finals

Powell has played one of the weakest schedules that I have seen to get their record high. THey have lost to Breathitt, Letcher and KCC.
It would have been easier to get excited over a winning record if they had played some of the top teams.

THat would be a good upgrade to the Powell County Schedule for sure.
