Holmes travels to the Fieldhouse Saturday night for an 8:00 tip off with the Royals in the U.S Bank Classic.
Holmes (9-3) comes in off a 58-38 win over Bryan Station in the championship of the LMIT..
Mason Co (9-2) comes in off a 64-51 win over Ashland in the championship of the AIT.
The last time these two met at the Fieldhouse was in 05 when Holmes beat the Royals 67-51 on senior night.
Thoughts?

I'm gonna go with Holmes in this one. 10 of their first 12 games have either been on the road or at a neutral site so I don't think "home court advantage" will come in to play in this game.
Looking at the match ups, Mason Co is going to have trouble with Holmes athleticism, size and length:
5'9 Gilbert v 6'3 Slusher
5'10 J. Lang v 6'5 J. Johnson
6'2 B. Lang v 6'5 R. Johnson
6'8 Setty v 6'8 Pittman
6'2 Black v 6'6 Rice
Setty v Pittman should be a great match up but outside of that, I just can't really see MC contending with the Dogs. Holmes quickness and depth should play a big role in this game as well.
Holmes- 58
Mason- 45

With Pawsatt I would have given the Royals a shot. Now that they don't have him I believe Holmes is a <10 point favorite. A few weeks ago I would have said a 10+ favorite but I just don't know which Dawgs team will show up.
If they do not put a hand in Setty's face, he will score 25 and draw fouls with his lanky drives

Holmes looked very good against Bryan Station last night.
JJ only played 3 or 4 minutes in the first half and Ricardo didn't play the last 3 or 4 minutes due to foul trouble and Holmes bench really stepped up. I can see Mayfield, Herndon, Hayes, and McClendon really frustrating Gilbert and the other MC guards because of their quickness.
The more I think about it, the less I like MC's chances in this game. I guess the game against Bryan Station really sold me on the Dogs. They also started pressing more which I could see bothering the Royals since Gilbert is really the only one who handles the ball exceptionally well.
IF MC can make this a half court game it will be close...if they try to get out and run, Holmes by 10+.

I think you are way underselling the Royals here. This is the same group of kids that I have coached AAU ball with and my son has either played with or against since the 3rd grade. Setty and Gilbert have tremendous poise and will not be rattled or intimidated by the Dawgs at all. I beleive they can run, that's where I will disagree with you. Setty is so much better than his brother in the transition game, and Gilbert reminds me a lot of Travis Ford with his feisty ball handling. I'm not sure who they put Rico on, but I would think they put him against Treg.
I know it's pointless to say, but I would have loved to have seen Pawsatt with this group to see what they could have done as a complete unit. I completely wrote this team off when he got hurt in Football, but have become pleasantly surprised to see how they have played so far.

I'll take Holmes by 8.

Holmes not playing as some predicted in the preseason. Mason, losing Pawsat and Barner, really hurt them. The Langs and Black has stepped in and doing well. With that all said, I will still take Holmes in a close one.

Should be a good one being at The Fieldhouse. It's always tough to go there and steal a win if you're the road team. Still yet, I'll take the Bulldogs by 10 or more.
Good luck to both!

I'm not underselling MC at all. I think they're a very good team. I just think Holmes is a better team and their size combined with the length and athleticism will really bother the Royals.
Outside of Setty and Gilbert, who else does MC have that can athletically match up with the Holmes guys or have anywhere near the talent of them? I don't think Holmes will put Rico on Treg. He'll either be on Lang or Gilbert. PG play is key for Mason co so it wouldn't surprise me if that's who Ric defends. The combination of Rice and Pittman will defend Setty.

Holmes looked very good against Bryan Station last night. They held a 20 point lead for much of the second half and got up by as many as 26.
They may have been struggling offensively early on, but their defense has been pretty solid all year long. The bench is getting better with each game and they are really starting to settle in and gain some confidence.
Holmes is also playing together more than I've seen them all year.
BTW, I'm honestly not sure Barner would have been that much of a help to MC in this game or in general. I wasn't very impressed with him in Holmes game against Station. He was held to just 4 points and really struggled to defend Pittman, Rice, and R. Johnson.

After Mason County beat Holmes for the state title, everyone knew how young that group was and that they would be a force for the next couple years.
We all saw what they did last year and when it's all said and done, they will likely be at Rupp once again this year.
They do have their "off" nights and at times it almost feels like they are undisciplined and go through the motions. I just can't imagine them having a bad night Saturday. I would love to see the Royals get a huge win against the defending champs and it will likely be a close game, but I think Holmes just has a little too much right now.

Holmes by 15. I just don't see how Mason Co. is going to rebound with Holmes. If Holmes attacks the basket and the glass, Mason will be in for a long night.

Think Setty will have a off night. He does not like contact and think that the athletic Holmes players will fustrate him.

Something to take in account...Mason hasn't faced a team yet with near the size or athleticism of Holmes.

You are right, their schedule is way down this year. Will look forward to your recap of the game.

Mason County is overachieving this year, but if they win this one, put Ohearn down for Coach of the year. The matchups just don't favor Mason County at all and Rico and Pittman are going to have huge games

They key for Mason will be how well they handle Holmes' quickness of defense.
Hayes, McClendon, Mayfield, and Herndon are extremely quick and aggressive.
I'm looking forward to seeing whether Mason tries to play man to man or if they'll go with a zone like most teams have done to Holmes this year.

You will see both.
