SHAMROCKS HOST BALLARD IN STEINHAUSER GYMNASIUM
SHAMROCKS LOOKING TO REMAIN PERFECT IN DISTRICT GAMES

Trinity plays host to district rival Ballard tonight in Steinhauser Gymnasium, the first time the Shamrocks have welcomed the Bruins into their home facility since beating them 63-60 on Jan. 11, 2008.
The Shamrocks are coming off a 77-66 win over Waggener in the team’s district opener on Tuesday. Senior Mr. Basketball candidate Josh Sewell scored a season-high 27 points, his second straight 20-point outing, to lead the Shamrocks. It marked just the 11th time in the last nine seasons that a Trinity played had scored 27 points or more in a game for the Shamrocks.
Tonight’s game marks the 14th of the Mike Szabo era against Ballard.
Trinity was impressive in two preseason scrimmages. The Shamrocks defeated Scott County 51-49 in the Fast Lane Classic in Inez, Kentucky and Bowling Green 64-47. Sewell registered 25 points against Scott County and 18 against the Purples to solidify his standing as a top candidate for the Mr. Basketball Award in the state of Kentucky.

GAME NOTES
Shamrocks Successful in District Play
Mike Szabo has had much success during his tenure at Trinity in district play. Trinity is 25-11 in district games overall under Szabo, including a 23-9 mark against district foes since the start of the 2002-03 season. The Shamrocks have won multiple district games in each of Mike Szabo’s eight years at Trinity and at least one postseason district game in six of his first eight years with the school.
• Szabo registered the 25th district win of his career in a 77-66 win over Waggener on Dec. 11, 2009 on the road.

Sewell is Mr. Basketball Candidate
Trinity senior guard Josh Sewell is a top candidate for the Mr. Basketball award in the state of Kentucky. He hopes to become the first player from Louisville to win the award since 2005 and the first to ever attend Miami (Ohio) following the receipt of the award.

Sewell Likely to Join 1,000 Point Club in 2009-10, Passes 900 Point Mark vs. Oldham County
Senior Josh Sewell continues to post some impressive numbers in the scoring column and has positioned himself to become the eighth member of the 1,000 Point Club at Trinity this season. Sewell currently has 945 career points in 86 games. Sewell registered 457 points last season in 30 games. It was the most points in a single season by a Trinity player since Tanner Jacobs had 493 points in 29 games during the 2006-07 season.
The most recent addition to the exclusive club is Kyle Saxton, who scored 1,148 points in three seasons between 2003 and 2005. Saxton became the seventh member of the club during the second quarter of the 2005 Louisville Invitational Tournament Championship game on a free throw that completed a four-point play. He finished that game with 1,016 career points. He posted 441 points during his senior campaign, averaging 13.8 points per contest in 32 games.
• Sewell’s 945 points place him second in scoring among players during the Mike Szabo era behind only Kyle Saxton (1148). He surpassed Matt Chambless’ 927 points in the Dec. 11, 2009 win over Waggener.
• Josh Sewell netted a career high 31 points against Jeffersontown on Feb. 13, 2009. It was the most points by a Trinity player since Tanner Jacobs had 31 points vs. Clay County on Dec. 21, 2006. It was the second most points by a Trinity player under Szabo. Chris McCoy holds the best mark in the Szabo era, scoring 36 points against Male on Dec. 17, 2002 in an overtime loss.

Ballard Escapes With 56-53 Win Over Trinity
Sewell Notches 27 Points for Second Straight Game
LOUISVILLE, Ky. –Trinity allowed Ballard to escape Steinhauser Gymnasium with a 56-53 district win on Tuesday in 27th District play. It marked the second straight game between the teams played at Steinhauser Gymnasium decided by three points.
Mr. Basketball candidate Josh Sewell registered 27 points for the second consecutive game. Senior forward Taylor Epley added 15 points.
Trinity fought back from a seven point fourth quarter deficit at 51-44, the largest lead of the game for either team, to 51-50 on a Sewell basket. He was unable to get the tying free throw with 59.2 remaining. Ballard then went up 54-50 before Epley hit a three-point basket with 33 seconds left. Ballard hit 2 of 4 free throws in the final 30 seconds by Ian Chiles to seal the deal after a Trinity turnover with 6.5 seconds left.
Sewell scored six straight for the Shamrocks and 10 of 12 points during a run that spanned parts of the first two quarters to pace the Shamrocks in the first half on their way to a 19-18 lead at the break after a Charles Foster basket at the buzzer. It was the sixth time in the last 11 meetings between the teams that Trinity had led at the half.
Ballard scored the final six points of the third quarter to take a 34-30 lead into the final period.
Trinity’s defense limited the Ballard offense that had been superb in five prior contests. They entered the game having scored at least 75 points in each of their five games prior to tonight’s contest.
Trinity returns to action on Thursday after a short break when the Shamrocks will face Chaparral (Arizona) in the first round of the 2009 Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass. Tipoff is set for 9:00 p.m. at Fairdale High School.
Notes
• Szabo used the starting lineup of Chancellor Armstrong, Charles Foster, Daniel Corbett, Taylor Epley and Josh Sewell for the fourth consecutive game.
