Guys, even if you hate us read this article, it about sums up why we are so defensive of each other, stick up for one another, and why the small school on the hill is so close knit.
We're all family.....:big grin:

My favorite quotes from the article are these.
"There are three sets of brothers on the team and 12 sets of cousins - the products of large Catholic families that have stayed close to their Newport roots and sustained the NewCath football program for generations."
And
"Schneider, now in his 40th year as the head coach of his alma mater, often jokes that any NewCath roster from the 1970s reads similarly to today's. Times might change at the school on the hill, but the names rarely do."

Okay 98, I can't hold back any longer. (Maybe I have read too many NCC stories this week--and I can understand if someone thinks that I sound a little jealous--which I am NOT).
I don't think that this is the reason why NCC is so defensive of each other. I truly believe (and I am not "intentionally" trying to start trouble here) that NCC is always so defensive of each other because they can't get the job done when it counts. There is also a huge chip on the shoulder of any/all NCC players and fans in the time leading up to a game with them. There is constant conversation about how much better NCC is as opposed to the team that they are playing.
This really doesn't bother me at all--because it actually makes things easier. It is easier to fly under the radar (which is another Beechwood secret that people may/may not understand at this point).
Also--look at the way the players on the field act--that also has a lot to do with the reason why most people are not huge NCC fans. It is almost like watching the NFL. After every little play--there is a big party/big celebration. Eventually--your opponents will use that against you--and a big reason why there are a lot of people up here who are not in love with NCC.
There is also another segment of the population (which I blame on Ryan Ernst) that always mentions NCC in the same breath as good ole' Beechie Tech. That entire line of conversation does nothing to make me feel better about NCC. (NCC is definitely a great program--but they are simply not on the same level at this point. I do admit--it is possible that they could get there in the future).
Again--not to burst your bubble, 98--because of you/your comments--it has made it a lot easier to be happy for NCC. And I truly hope that they win. But I have to be honest--after reading that article this morning--I wanted to puke. It really had nothing to do with tomorrow night. Especially since the freshman will most likely never step foot on the field during the actual game.
I am interested in the conversation that comes from this one. I have yet to truly test the waters of honesty on this board. I hope it remains "civil"!

Buddy,
Your entire post is football related, I wasn't even thinking about football when I posted this this morning.

My other favorite part of that article...
"Of note: NewCath has no baseball diamond on campus but has four state titles in the sport. It has no football field but is trying for its second state football title. It has no track but won a state title in that sport in 1967."

But it is very much "related".
Like I said--(but I understand both ways)--I am not looking to pick a fight. But personally--in regard to your statement about why NCC is so defensive (for each other)--I don't agree with your assessment. I understand that you have a closer perspective--and I accept that.
I just don't think that this article explains the issue that you brought up.

There is a family atmosphere in that school that you will never be able to comprehend.
It IS that simple.
You know I respect Beechwood and all that it's about, our schools are not all that different.
But they are. Just different. I'm not saying we're better or worse than anyone, it's just different. That's all.
Some may even think we're weird for that, and that's fine. That's your and their opinion.

Wow.
Maybe I should step out of this one.
As far as family atmosphere--you are right--I could not begin to comprehend it. Especially at a place like Beechwood where there are kids in the program who have families that go back 5 generations (NCC has been open long enough for that).
I was willing to keep quiet until that comment. But then again--maybe your right. I couldn't comprehend it--because I am used to SO MUCH MORE!
In reality--I understand where you are coming from--but seriously--your line of conversation here is more than a little off or better yet--unrealistic.
Most people don't get the impression that NCC is so "family-oriented". They get the impression that the kids that go there are spoiled--and used to getting their own way.
Does that take things too far? Maybe. But I don't buy into your logic. Simply because you opened your self up for it.

I truly think we're arguing for the same side here. So I'm going to stop.

CM,
We play our home baseball games at a local county park.
We run track and play football home games at Newport High School.
