5-1 offense vs 6-2 pros and cons
#1
When should 5-1 offense be used vs. 6-2 offense. What are pros and cons?

A 5-1 offense is used commonly by higher volleyball league levels. It requires one really good setter while the other five are potential attackers. Of course, having five potential attackers increases your chances of getting points. Another benefit about this is that the setter can confuse the opposing team by occasionally jumping and "dumping" the volleyball on the opponent's side.

A 6-2 offense has six potential attackers and two setters. This is a good formation because there are always three front-row hitters available. The bad thing about this formation is that it requires the two setters to not only be good setters, but also good hitters.

Or they could sub out. To answer the q--a coach has to evaluate his players and their defensive/offensive abilities before an option. Pros and cons are somewhat easy to decide.
5-1 One setter constantly works with the same hitters building and learning each. As Deathstar stated 5-1 is used by higher level teams...one of the reasons is their ability to attack off the backrow when the setter comes to the front and run a double middle hit with a backrow attack especially with mens competition. Backrow attacks are very common on the elite and international levels. A disadvantage is can you setter block? If they can't you "must" have a strong and quick MB or you get what all hitters want one on one. A smart team can also constantly attack the setter keeping them from running offense.

IF you have the players...double and triple blocking is the way to go with a 6-2 JMO. The mens international game is amazing with their triple blocks. I've seen 7'2"--7'--6'8" front lines. You will have two setters but each setter will only have the same number hitters as the 5-1. Hitters will to adapt to each setter. If the setters become hitters and the primary setter must take first ball--there is another setter which can only help.

Glad to see fans & players becoming more educated on this great game. Didn't see these type of q's 3-4-5 years ago.
