I am old school. Steps, and weight jacket always works and increases speed. Jump rope also.

The new wave now is plyometric exercises, and they work. Just do a search on the internet, and you can find all kinds of Plyo and jumping drills

Plyo's are great for boys or girls that already have a decent vertical. If they do not then they will not make it and get hurt. The boxes can be very dangerous if not done correctly. As for the ladder it is great for footwork and speed.
