The Dayton boys' basketball team lost an early lead, but battled back late to defeat Ludlow 55-47 Wednesday in the second round of the Touchstone Energy Ninth Region All "A" Classic at Newport.
The Greendevils, who led by as many as 12 points in the first half, fell behind by six at the end of the third quarter before the dramatic late-game run.
"For some reason we're a little hesitant to put teams away early when we have the chance," Dayton head coach Tom Dilts said. "The good news was we didn't quit. We didn't play the best game, but we got the best result."
Through the game's first four minutes, Dayton spurted out to a 12-2 lead behind the inside play of junior center Timmy Massey, who scored five consecutive points in the run.
"We felt we had (an advantage) in our height, so our game plan was to get inside," Massey said. "That worked for us early."
Dayton extended its lead to nine points going into halftime before the Ludlow offense came alive.
Led by Kyle Williamson and Brett Betz, the Panthers stormed out of the locker room to go on a 16-4 run in the third quarter. Betz scored all of his 14 points in the second half, while Williamson added six of his team-high 15 points in the frame.
"We went into halftime knowing that we hadn't played a very good game, but their lead was still in single digits," Ludlow coach Cory Highfield said. "I think we came out with a little more confidence and our offense picked it up (in the third quarter)."
Thanks to a pep talk from Dilts, Dayton came out more aggressive on defense in the game's final quarter. The Greendevils took a 43-42 lead with 4:35 remaining on a jumper from Greg Kraft, spurring a 12-3 run that would give them the eventual victory.
"After the third quarter I basically sat them down and told them that if they want to be playing Friday, they need to play extra aggressive the last quarter," Dilts said. "I guess they listened and were able to make their corrections and get the win."
Massey ended his night scoring eight points in the decisive quarter and finishing with a game-high 17 points.
Junior Greg Kraft scored 14 points for Dayton, while senior Shawn Eastin added 12 points.
"Dayton has so many athletes on the floor that they are very hard to defend," said Highfield, who led Ludlow to a one-point overtime victory over Villa Madonna in the first round. "This was a good test for our team."
Dayton advances to the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday against host Newport, which defeated Heritage on Tuesday.
"It's been a long time since we've advanced in this tournament," Dilts said. "We are just taking it one game at a time and playing our game. We'll see what we can do Friday night."
