MAYSVILLE - There might be no better example of how important preparation is in day-to-day practice than this season's Campbell County boys' basketball team.

For the sixth time in 10 games, the Camels were faced with a last-minute change to their starting lineup Friday, but they posted a 67-32 victory over Bracken County in the first round of the Mason County Invitational.

With the win, the Camels, ranked No. 9 in the Enquirer coaches' poll, ran their record to 9-1 and once again displayed their roster's versatility.

"In practice we try to prepare guys by playing them at different spots," Campbell head coach Scott Code said. "This is the sixth time that we've found out (on game day) that one of our starters wouldn't be able to play. Luckily our guys are pretty versatile players."

On Friday, it was the Camels' talented post player, Petey Albrecht, who came down with a stomach virus. His absence forced Campbell County to rely on the trio of Pat Nerl, Ben Franzen and Brady Jolly to fill the void. Those three responded with a combined 51 points.

"We wanted to come out and push the ball a little more tonight," said Nerl, who finished with a game-high 24 points. "All we were worried about was finding a way to get the victory no matter who is on the court. We don't change a whole lot, we just try to play as a team to get the win."

The Camels started fast, outscoring the Polar Bears 23-7 in the first quarter behind nine points from Jolly and six apiece from Franzen and Nerl.

Nerl continued his hot shooting in the second quarter, knocking down three 3-pointers and scoring 11 points in the frame to extend the halftime lead to 36-16.

"Pat can certainly stretch the defense with his shooting," Code said. "But he is also just as likely to post up as play on the perimeter. We feel the same about Brady (Jolly) and Ben (Franzen)."

Bracken County cut the lead to 15 points midway through the third quarter before the Camels answered with an 11-0 run in the period's final two minutes to clinch the victory.

Devin Workman led Bracken County with nine points.

The Camels' appearance in the Mason County Invitational comes fresh off a tournament championship in the Ashland Invitational last weekend. Campbell defeated East Carter, Simon Kenton and Beechwood on the way to that title.

Campbell County will take on Bishop Brossart at 8 p.m. today, with the tournament's championship game being held at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"The Ashland tournament allowed us to play three pretty close games," Code said. "We have to win tomorrow, but it's nice to have the opportunity to play three days in a row."

Campbell Co. is going to need Albrecht tonight against Brossart. Brossart is really playing well right now.
