Central leads way with 11 players
By ROCKY STANLEY â The Independent
Another special season for Johnson Central football is reflected on the 2008 Large School All-Area Team.
The Golden Eagles landed 11 players on the squad selected by area Class 4A and 5A coaches.
Additionally, Johnson Central had the top vote-getters for Player of the Year (Chase Richardson) and Coach of the Year (Jim Matney).
Richardson, a senior, rushed for 2,039 yards by averaging 12 per carry. He also led the team in tackles from his linebacker position as the Golden Eagles won 11 games and reached the 5A quarterfinals.
âI thought one of the biggest things was that every time he went head to head with some of the other big names, Chase consistently outplayed them,ââ Matney said.
For example, Richardson ran for 188 yards and made 13 solo tackles in a matchup with Breathitt County standout Channing Fugate, a first team All-State selection by The Associated Press. Richardson had four 200-yard rushing games this season, topped by a 291-yard night in Johnson Centralâs 49-14 playoff rout of Covington Catholic.
The 6-foot, 215-pounder carried for 162 yards and totaled 12 tackles in a 35-21 loss to eventual state champion Fort Thomas Highlands.
âObviously, he had a fabulous year,ââ Matney said. âStrong, quick and smart, that pretty much sums Chad up. Heâs a prime-time player.ââ
Richardson, who started four years for the Golden Eagles, is also prime time in the classroom. The Governorâs Scholar carries a 4.0 average and ranks first in his class. He scored 30 on the ACT.
âI try to be a good student-athlete and work hard in both areas,ââ Richardson said. âMy parents raised me to be the best person I can be.ââ
Richardson is being recruited by Army, Brown, Columbia, Penn, Holy Cross as well as several Division III and NAIA schools.
âRight now, Iâm keeping my options open,ââ he said. âIâm going to take some visits after Christmas break.ââ
Richardson is the latest in a line of Johnson Central running backs to receive the All-Area Player of the Year award. Shane Grim and Ron Blume also received the accolade in recent years since Matney took over the program.
âIt says a lot about the system and the great blocking weâve had,ââ Richardson said. âTo be put in a category with those other guys is a great honor.ââ
Johnson Central rushed for more than 4,200 yards during the regular season and kept rolling in three playoff games.
According to Matney, the Golden Eagles set a state record by averaging 431 yards on the ground.
âMaxPreps (Web site) had us leading the whole nation in rushing this season,ââ Matney said. âThatâs a big honor for our kids and a tribute to all the work they have put in.ââ
Three of Johnson Centralâs offensive linemen â Travis Scott, Josh Lackey and John Little â were chosen on the All-Area team.
The Golden Eaglesâ other selections included freshman kicker Trent Davis, defensive linemen Dennis Dillon and Ryan Harlow, linebackers Nathan Dillon and Tanner Bratton, and defensive backs Ian Welch and J.K. Hall.
Welch finished his career with 31 interceptions.
âIan had a fantastic career,ââ Matney said. âI think heâs the best athlete in eastern Kentucky.ââ
Johnson Central reached the double-digit win total for the third consecutive year under Matneyâs direction.
âWeâre really proud of the back-to back-to-back district championships,ââ Matney said. âThree in a row is a nice accomplishment. Weâve just got to get other the last hump and get that state championship.ââ
Ashland, district runner-up to the Golden Eagles, had eight players selected.
Fullback Josh Alber carried for 950 yards and 20 touchdowns, while tailback Rashard Carter finished with 1,495 yards rushing and seven TDs. Both are juniors.
The Tomcats also placed offensive linemen Josh Salisbury and Evan Holbrook, tight end Ryan Bonner, defensive lineman J.C. Thompson, linebacker Connor Swift and defensive back Josh Miller.
Boyd County quarterback Zac Wilson and Rowan County tailback joined Richardson, Alber and Carter in the All-Area backfield.
Wilson had 2,223 all-purpose yards. He ran for 1,101 yards and 14 TDs, and threw for another 568 yards in leading Boyd County to a district championship. The Lions are also represented by receiver Cory Moore, defensive lineman Zach Green and linebacker Donnie Bryant.
Rowan Countyâs Cross, a sophomore, had three 200-yard rushing games in a 1,200-yard season and averaged 9.8 per carry. Teammate T.J. Chin was chosen as a defensive back.
Greenup County selections included Zach Smith (receiver), Joe Bob Greenslate (linebacker) and Eric Craft (punter). Lawrence Countyâs Ben Preston is a member of the All-Area offensive line.
