Coaches and the economy ...
#1
Pretty interesting, something that made me say "hmmm"

I was talking today with Newport principal Scott Draud about his school's football coach opening, when he made an interesting point.

"A lot of (the hiring process) is going to depend on our staffing," he said. "We could be facing cuts."

Draud continued to say that the elimination of teaching positions would affect what kind of coach Newport hires. (For instance, if the best candidate is a biology teacher and the school has no biology openings, then there could be a problem.) That has always been the case with high school athletics, but look for it to become more of a factor as school districts look to save money in tough economic times. Also, don't be surprised if you see a lot more paraprofessionals (coaches with careers outside education) leading area teams.

If also should be interesting to see how coaches are handled differently when districts begin making cuts.

For the record, Draud said Newport's football coach search is still "wide open." He said he's in the process of forming a committee to review candidates. The school still is taking applications.
