Should the KHSAA go back to the old days?
#1
I was talking with my dad today, we began talking about the playoff system. We came to a general consensus(sp?), as i'm sure others would to, that the last years, inter-district play was a little odd. Then he told me that when he was in high school, the district champ, was the ONLY team in the district to make the playoffs. With the format we are using right now, there are some teams that don't win a single regular season game, yet because their district only has 4 teams, they make the playoffs. I don't agree with this. Maybe take the top 2? or just take the district champ....thoughts?

It sounds like the way in used to be was a descent way of doing things. Now, you have a team that has no chance playing against a team that will beat them by 40+ points and risking injury to all involved. The best teams do not always win the state title because they lose their best players in 1st round games that are not competitive.

I say take the top 2 out of each district with 4 teams and top 3 with a district more than 4 teams.

Sounds like an idea that would/could work. How would you acount for the possibility of odd number of teams? Would byes to the top team in a District with 4 teams work? Let #2 and #3 play 1st round with the winner playing #1?

That's much too confusing. The top teams would have a bye, and who would the third seed play?

I like the way it used to be when they took the top two teams from each district.

I agree, the new system is way too watered down!!! Teams with losing records do not belong in the playoffs. Lets go back to four classes!

When I was in highschool it was only the top team in each district, but i would like to see the top 2 teams in each district go.

Play off system as it is is nothing more than a money hunt. KHSAA brought this system in for more schools to make more money at the gate, but in all reality who wants to see a 4 seed play a 1 seed. I would bet that this game is a loser by the time the host school pays 5 officials. I liked the first and second place team format much better, but in all honesty I would prefer only the district winner go to the play off's. To many teams drag the season out until Dec now. The season should be over and champions crowned by Thanksgiving weekend.

Well it seems that a lot of people don't like the current playoff system used in football where almost every school makes the playoff, yet no one seems to question the fact that every school makes the playoffs in all the other sports.

I guess my question is why would it be ok for every team in all of the other sports have a chance to play in the playoffs and not football?

What other sport do you get hit every play and have a bigger chance of getting injured in the first round in the playoffs. Agianst a team that you are betting by 30+

I've seen a few games masquerading as basketball games where you were hit about every play. Smile

I think maybe two teams. Because some time the best team in the dist. might not make it. So if you take two you can be sure that wont happen.

top 2

First: 5 classes.
Second: top 3 in each district, dist. champs get a bye. Similar to NFL.

nice to see so many replying. i know its just one page, but hey, its my first thread. i like the 2 team idea. because like one of you all said, the district champ isn't always the best team. watching a 4 seed play a 1 seed is rarley intertaining, nor constructive. should they use a lottery style way of picking which districts play who? or go with 1 playing 2 etc...

I hate that idea. We're looking forward to travelling 3 hrs to Bell Co., even though we could go in against them winless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
