here's the story from the Lexington Herald.. http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/12699934.htm

A Pike County student's failed drug test at East Ridge High School triggered a chain of events yesterday that led to five deaths, including his own, authorities said.

Matthew Hackney, a senior, tested positive in a drug test and then went home and shot his parents and grandmother to death in their carport. He was later killed after he fled toward Pikeville on U.S. 460 and crashed head-on into a pickup driven by an Elkhorn City employee, who also died, authorities said.

State police identified the shooting victims as Hackney's parents, Ivan L., 47, and Shirley Hackney, 44, and grandmother, Wilma Childers Hackney, 63. Local residents identified the Elkhorn City worker as Terry Taylor, 41. Police were unsure of Matthew Hackney's age, but said he was "about 17."

The bodies of the three shooting victims were found about 3:45 p.m. lying several feet apart at a residence on E and R Road in Elkhorn City, said Mike Maynard, a paramedic for the Elkhorn City Ambulance Service. Maynard said all three had been shot multiple times, apparently with a high-caliber rifle.

Police were able to locate Hackney as he was driving north on U.S. 460. Hackney was about 10 miles from Elkhorn City when, about 3:50 p.m., he crashed into a city-owned pickup driven by Taylor at the mouth of Powell's Creek. Both drivers died at the scene, state police said.

Between the two events, Hackney stopped at Pizza Plus of Belcher to see a childhood friend, Christa Coleman, 18, of Lick Creek, who works in the pizza shop.

"He just told me he killed them," Coleman said. "He said they had caught him with drugs and weed at school today. They had a drug test and he failed it and when they tried to arrest him, he ran."

State police said it was unclear how Hackney left the school.

"I'm not sure whether he left school with police officers or left school with parents," said Sgt. Steve Spurlock last night. "We're still trying to clarify all that."

East Ridge High Principal Ralph Kilgore could not be reached for comment.

Coleman said Hackney "was definitely on something" when he was talking with her.

Hackney did not give Coleman any details of the shooting, she said.

"He just told me he shot them until they died," she said.

Coleman, who graduated from East Ridge this year, said Hackney had asked her if he could come to her house and hide out for a few days "and I told him, 'No way.'" After he left, Coleman said she called state police.

Coleman, however, said Hackney "was on the war path."

Yup...who knows where he was headed

The question was posed what would he have done if he had not had crashed...
To answer that question in all honesty, he would have probably shot his younger brother Jason and his grandfather Denver. Anyone around him was in danger. He had 2 guns that day and was ready to use them apparently. Not all the facts that you hear through the news but with talking to Jason's girlfriend as we speak, slowly the details are unfolded. Word through Jason and his girlfriend is where I am getting these facts.
Please continue to think or pray about Jason and everyone else involved. This young man has been thrown into reality and is something that he did not deserve to face. Signing the coroner report to turn over THREE bodies of your family is not something that a 16 year old should have to face.

This has to be a really hard time for Jason.....Tribe, you and all his classmates need to support him and always be around him :thumb:
#38
He has our full support. Lots of us will be attending the funeral. His girlfriend called him throughout the day. She will be there for him and we will all be helping out. They are taking up money to send flowers and things for Matt, Jason, and Lisa.
#39
That's GREAT!! But gotta keep it up for years to come!
#40
Yea. We are doing what we can. That's all we can do for now.
Jason isn't coming to school of course so telephones calls and moral support is what we have to offer. Flowers will be there out of respect for Matthew and to show support for the whole family.
#41
Thats good Tribe, it seems like your doing everything possible.
#42
Just trying to show him that people do care.
You probably played basketball with his sister Balla. I did.

One of my best friends who goes to pburg (went to east ridge when he was a freshman) Brandon Peters said that he was in the same grade as this kid and went to school with him but he said he was always a real cool guy and Brandon told me that he never thought he would ever do something like this. Whenever he found out about it I could tell he was really suprised about it.
#44
Yea, Brandon and I had a class together our freshmen year. Pretty sure that he would not remember me but Brandon probably reacted like all of us did, we were in shock. Matt wasn't the type of person that anyone would have picked to do such a thing. He always did his school work and was very well mannered. An all around good guy until he started doing drugs to fit in....shows how far kids will go to fit it AND the effects that it has on them and others.
#45
PM me Tribe and i'll ask Brandon if he remembers you or not, Brandon said that he wasnt even aware this kid had ever taken drugs in his life. And I kno how far ppl will go to fit in, but it's alot easier to fit in without drugs than with it, it's all about the ppl u hang out with and ppl u WANT to fit in with. Does anybody kno what kind of drug he was caught with, because i have never heard of somebody killing their parents for getting caught with weed.
#46
It wasn't weed. He wasn't even caught with the drugs, he got caught under the influence and got a public intoxication charge. He had taken like 5 Xans and some Ultrams, some Perks, and other stuff...

His sister is an RA in my dorm. I was sitting in the lobby when the state police came and told her about it the other day. It's awful! My thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends.
#48
Jason came after school today to see some of his friends.
Everyone gave him hugs and told him how much we were thinking about him so hopefully he found comfort in knowing that we care.
Continue to pray for Lisa, Jason, Ivan's family, Shirley's family, and espically Terry Taylor's family.
The whole county is somehow related back to these events and people so let your thoughts be with them in their time of great need.
