Russell doesn't have any rebuilding years! We reload. Plain and simple.

Someone correct me if i am wrong. The only common opponent they had was Ashland. JC scored more points but also gave up more points. And the Russell-Ashland is a good rivalry so both teams will probably will play a notch harder against each other. That is a hard to judge. So it is just speculation to say the least.
I have no problem with them being no.1 and 1A

Since Bath county is considered NEKC (we send seniors to the NEKC senior bowl), they have to be at LEAST ahead of West Carter and Lewis county being that they have beat them the last two seasons and will most likely do that again this season. Bath county at #5

That hurt man,no crack person here though.Just throwing it out there.:p New coach and close to 70 kids out this year. They can't do much worst than last year.
If they had Ivan they would belong on there.
I do not want to crack on Russell they are the king around here for sure but I don't know about 2TD favorite against every team year in and year out.But they are close.

I must have misunderstood the title of the thread. I thought it was the Top Ten this year. Not the Top Ten in Tradition or the Top Ten Last Year.
Having said that........who cares! I'd rather be #1 at the end of the year than at the beginning, and not just NEKY, the entire KY. I don't care if JC starts the season out 11th or last in the preseason. I'm lookn' forward to where we finish!

In all honesty, right now. JC wouldprobably beat Russell. Russell has 4 new guys on the line. Which all are talented, but will need to get more experience under thier belts to run this wing-t properly.
Plus AJ has looked good at QB this pre-season, but that doesn't convert to Friday night success. I think he will need to build up some confidence in himself, and maybe some in Ivan too.
JC is 5A and imo would probably win 6 out of 10 most years.

Wow you sound like some Ashland fans about four years ago when Matney first came to Johnson Central. There's only one way to settle this discussion. Both teams should play and I know that JC would love to get a series going with Russell.

I dont think Russell will play them, not scared..... I just heard a rumor about something that happened in the past and I dont see these two teams playing each other,,,,,,,for a long time.... Thats all I know.

Nah, I meant Ivan gain some confidence in AJ's throwing ability. I think the team has full confidence in Coach. I think they may be willing to open the passing game just a nudge this year, but AJ has to proove he can deliver and minimize mistakes and bad decisions.

I know that they would love to come to the Hank and play. Yes JC did loose to Belfry by the score of 28-12 but that's hardly being "throttled". If you want to talk about getting "throttled" look at last years Belfry/Breathitt County game. The pirates "throttled" a team that Russell couldn't beat on there home field by 38 points. By the way I would also welcome the Devils to the nest as well. I just think it would be a terrific series to start up between the two schools.

Bath is a solid team.I personally think Bath and some surounding counties needs to play more of the North Eastern Teams such as Russell,Greenup,Raceland,Ashland and Mason. That might help gain recognition in the NEKC.

Well every other team seems to do it. Especially any team I can think of that beats Russell. I don't think it will be a primary weapon, just a few more passes than usual. They did it in 98 and they were pretty successful.

Here is a take, at the younger levels of play they learn the Wing-T formation. In practice those younger teams learn to defend against the wing-t. I know at the end of JFL level of play pass defense is unheard of.... As the kids go thru the MIddle School they pick it up a little.
Here is a great teaching point. You need to run different firmations at the younger levels as well as the WING-T, The WING-T is the base formation and every kid needs to learn every blocking assignment on that offense. BUT you need to open the offense up in practice for your defensive backs, defensive ends and linebackers to learn coverage. The old days of " They will not pass because they are just a middle school" are over. I know that at the 8 year old level in Raceland they run and learn the Tony Franklin system. Yea it is hard to learn at 8 years old but the defense also learns to cover passes.
Now that the area team are playing more of each other every year... It helps to be well rounded. You need to learn to stop the run first but you need to learn the coverage and assignments as well.
Just a thought but I think that it wuold help Russell's pass defense to start learning to cover a little earlier in the lower grades.
This is by far NOT A BASH for the high school kids or coaches.. This is only an opinion from me as person..... granted the kids need to learn the proper way from the proper teaching and that is why it is important for the kids who play football in high school to be involved in the younger programs.
If they learn earlier they can only improve as they go.
Just an opinion and I am sure that I am going to be blasted for this post from someone........UMMM- FBALL comes to mind... WE seem to never see I-2-I......

I agree. Russell has traditonally had poor pass defense. Most big games in recent years that we lost, were usually due to poor pass defense. When I played we lost games in which we held teams to less than 100yds rushing, sometimes 50.
I have seen other people on here discuss this. While I think we by far have the best coaches in the area. I sometimes wish Russell would throw in a Nickel passage in obvious passing situations.
I'm a fan now and not a player, so I guess it is okay for me to Monday quarterback.

Learning to stop the run is the up most importance in HS football.Devil Iagree you must learn how to defend the pass at a earlier age as well.If any one disagrees with that just go ask Ironton.irateSho

I'd say you will be suprised then. The won 1 game last year with 30 kids now they have 70 so they shouldn't be worn out.
And I know no one will acknowledge it but they have a fine QB and faster recievers this year.

Well, if they are anything like they have been for the past few seasons, it's going to be another rough season. I believe they are playing for a new coach this year too (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Yes a new coach. They had a good coach last year he made them work hard a lot of kids didn't like the work ethic he had and wanted them to have. And from what i understand there were a lot of adults worked against him behind the scenes because he was no yes man that hurts down in LC. It was almost like they were afraid he was going to be sucessful.Or that is at least what i was told.
I'm not saying the new coach is a puppet ,he seems like a real nice guy.He is also the head baseball coach. And from what i understand counting all 4 grades there is 68-70 kids this year.
It may very well be a rough year but it could be a really good year as well. Time will tell.
