Best High School Football Game you've ever seen?
#61
I remember the games between Ashland and Lawrence when Arliss Beach was at Ashland and Michael West was at Lawrence County were always pretty good games. The two best running backs in the state going head to head was fun to see.

I can't remember the opponent or year (age!), but Breathitt Co. went several overtimes to win in the State 2A championship game. Some unbelievable plays by both teams!

EKUAlum05 Wrote:Brohm vs. Bush... no other game comes close. In terms of Belfry games here is a short list of memorable wins and losses.

Belfry vs. Pburg 2004 (Volume 1 and 2)... both were fantastic games. That was the best Pburg team I have ever seen in person, including the 2001 State Runner-Up. I have never seen a more anticipated game in EKY and never seen a crazier atmosphere with fans literally crawling into trees to watch.

2003 State Finals, Belfry vs. Etown... Etown led by current Auburn QB Chris Todd, Alabama DE Brandon Deaderick, UK Zipp Duncan, and a stable of excellent recivers vs. Jones/Howard and Belfry's run game... OT thriller with Jones scoring on 4th and goal to seal the first state title.

2005 State Semi's, Russell vs. Belfry.... Russell jumps all over Belfry to the tune of a 20-0 lead... Belfry storms back to score 14 2nd half points and cut the lead to 6... Numerous big plays by both teams, including Belfry's late drive as they went for the win that culminated with Kasey Clark intercepting the pass in the endzone.

2004 State Championship.... Belfry vs. O'Cath... Record setting QB Zack Bernard vs. Belfry's run game. Pirates dominated the game but never could pull away. Chris Varney ices it with the INT.

Belfry vs. Sheldon Clark Regional Finals 1998... Heavily favored Belfry led by Jonathan Wright has a date set-up with Jared Lorenzan and #1 Highlands with a win over the team they had beat earlier in the seaosn by 4TD's. SC never quits and forces OT, in OT Matney goes for the 2 point conversion and Moe Spradlin crawls over the goalline (literally, WYMT's video showed he was down at the 1 and crawled in) to steal the victory. The game prior Belfry defeated 10-1 Bell County 14-13.

1995 2nd Round and Regional Finals... Belfry started by winning an epic 7-0 victory on the road at Log Mountain against 10-1 Bell County in a game that was decided on the last play of regulation as Brad Hatfield caught the TD pass from Jeremy Howard. Next came Leslie County and Tim Couch in a game I swear that half of Eastern kentucky attended. Belfry lost to Couch 28-20 in a back and forth battle.

1995 or 1996 Belfry vs. Pikeville Belfry win against the Brent Coleman and Eddie Duramus led Panthers in the mud. Game was 0-0 throughout as neither team could gain yards. The score was either 0-0 or 6-0 Pikeville as Belfry marched down the field. They got inside Panther territory and benefitted from two straight pass intereference calls with no time on the clock. Finally Belfry completes a TD pass to win the game
.

All of those in bold were in '95, and the Belfry-Pikeville score was 7-6. Jeremy Howard threw the game-tying TD pass to Brad Hatfield and Mike Hardin kicked the game-winning PAT. That crew was led by Richie Blackburn, Adam Eastwood, Josh Stacy, Justin Browning and the others mentioned earlier. Probably one of the better run defenses Belfry has had and we actually threw the ball 10-12 times a game that year out of the Pro-I.

I would say Fleming -Neon & Jenkins @ Neon aka dustbowl 1996. I know it is uneceptable behavior and i by no means endorse these actions but it played out like this. Both teams took a beating all year. This was each teams last game of the season. There were player grudges all over the field. There was players that had defected to either school so were considered traders. And girlfriend problems to boot. These schools are only about 12 minutes apart. So with nothing to lose the bad apples on each team decided to exact there vengance upon each sworn enemy. There was alot of dirty play and cheap shotting. Handfulls of mud were donated to unsuspecting eyes at the line of scrimmage. And in the piles of players after each stop unfriendly grasp were passed around. Now these were two teams without anything to gain by way of trophy or merit. Each athlete however devised that on this night they would take the glory forever even if it meant the cost of there on dignity. FN bombarded Jenkins through the air and it was enough to clinch the win. To make a long story short. When the teams of violators and savages with no honor remaining met midfield to smack paws the final throws of poor sportsmanship were unleashed. The helmets swang wildly and staff and parent alike were at a significant dissadvantage. Some of the bloodlust carried over to the parents also. After many players got there senses back did the fiasco begin to dismantel. One team captain stood high on the bank and encouraged his accomplises to return to the locker room. It was finally over and though ammusing totally wrong. I hope incidents like this are never reapeated on any playing surface. Corrective actions and some suspensions were made. And probation was placed upon both teams. One can only speculate what the class of 96 for both teams see`s when he looks back.
