Which Power Meet was this? How many teams made the trip? Are the places you mentioned for the entire meet or just for their respective weight divisions?

Not very impressive, definately not at the state meet at North Hardin, those numbers are too low unless those are 195lb weight classes, my senior year, 235+ was 365lb bench and 680lb deadlift, 1045lb total,
885 night have gotten you third in an east ky meet in the 235+ class 15 years ago

None of the above guys mentioned are over 210 lbs. The places they won were in their class.
The event I believe is called the "Kentucky High School State Weightlifting Championship" and has been held in Elizabethtown for the last two years for sure.

40 teams total, and Russell finished 8th overall, if you look at the total weight it may not be impressive to you but to know that most of the kids are RB and the others are around 190-210 seems to be impressive.
I for one am proud of the boys.. This is just another great job for our kids. I also heard that rings were being mentioned too?? Just wondering..
Great job and the boys behind you are starting to take notice. I talked to one coach who said that the 7/8th grade are in the weight rooms now too. I plan on having the 6th grade boys there this summer..
Great Job DEVILS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, this is the meet I was referring to, and those are good numbers for those weight classes, this is the largest state meet that does not require drug testing, not saying that is a bad thing, but most public schools cannot afford to pay the costs for the other meet which is way too expensive to bring a team to unless you have about $150 per kid to participate
03-16-2008, 11:21 AM
They have been hosting this meet for over 20 years, I participated in it when I was at SVHS in 1992 and 1993. We had the state champion in the 235+ class when i was a junior, short and stalky beast of a guy. I like how they keep the state records on the a board for all to see year after year. How did the kids do in the lift/weight ratio? They usually give two awards for these with a split in the middle of the weight classes.

If I am reading incorrectly into a couple of the comments on this thread as being negative about a fantastic achievement by this group of athletes from our area I apologize.
Let me explain as clearly as I can what an achievement this was.
ALL Kentucky teams are eligible to compete and most do if they have athletes that are strong enough. The numbers for each team or school vary from only 1 to around 50(like Louisville Trinity and Trigg County which bring their Powerlifting Teams.... (not football teams but powerlifting teams! Many of those kids couldn't even get in a football stance)! Russell first competed with only one lifter because that was all they had with a chance to score. This year they took 14 lifters and most if not all were very very competitive in their weight class; many did not score but that is exactly the point I am making, it is EXTREMELY difficult to score in this meet. As to the question of how many participated... around four to five hundred of the strongest kids in the entire state competed. No, this event is not santioned by the KHSAA but it IS the Kentucky State Powerlifting Championship and Russell IS the
2008 Kentucky State powerlifting Champion of Class AAA.
I'm going to explain and I'm not sure some BGR posters understand the significance of these statements. First of all, if you know Adam Foster and an Adam Foster doesn't place that should tell you something right there. Tyler Jones finishes with two guys ahead of him? Tyler Jones is a Beast!!! He's almost freaky strong!! A vast majority of schools do not have lifters they feel can even compete in this meet because it is so difficult to place. To prove this point, out of all the schools that felt they actually did have lifters that could compete, around half of these schools could not even score one single point. Russell scored 19!!! There were a lot of schools represented in the state meet but actually the number of teams in the meet and in each class is Absolutely and Totally insignificant!
If anyone insists on being critical or jealous or whatever it is, instead of positive towards an accomplishment from this group from our area, the ONLY arguement anyone could possibly have is dealing with the classes. Russell has always been in class AA with Trigg County who won the overall title over Louisville Trinity and other large schools like Lou. Fern Creek, Montgomery County, Lou. Manual, George Rodgers Clark, Scott County, Hopkinsville, and others. Yes, Russell did get some luck in not being in class AA this year and no they would not have won AA, but they DID WIN AAA (which by the way had more schools represented than any other class) and Russell would have also won the class A championship easily. They also would have faired very well in the the larger classes:
4th if they were AAAAAA
Runner-up champion if they were AAAAA
Runner-up champion if they were AAAA
Sorry, but I can't really see any angle whatsoever to diminish the magnatude of what these boys accomplished in winning this championship. I hope they get rings, T-shirts, and patches for their jackets!!!! THEY EARNED IT!!!
Another thing, Powerlifting is NOT a sport at Russell. This was just simply a bunch of football players that have become very strong while getting ready for Friday nights in the fall. Half or more of their training does not even involve weights at all. They spend just as much time working on speed, footwork, agility, and they also get involved in passing leagues. Russell does not have a Strength class during school time like many other schools and if you would see the weight room at Russell you would be amazed by what these kids have been able to do.
To me these things make this title all the more impressive.
I do not know what other state meet someone could be referring to but it doesn't really matter, this meet is and has been the State Powerlifting Meet for around 20-30 years.
BTW
If by some slight chance someone would be hinting that Russell kids "juice up", well, we can't be sure about any school can we? I will however tell you this fact. Russell includes Steroid testing as a part of their random drug testing and has done so for quite some time. I have never once heard so much as one little rumor of one single time where this has resulted in the slightest problem.
Sometimes school and team pride go so much farther than we think in motivating players to work hard to be the best they can be.

You are very defensive in your post, Devilstory. I haven't seen a single person question the accomplishments of these young men, nor has anyone "hinted" towards cheating, etc.
People are looking for the other names, numbers, and schools of young men that competed in the meet, but that in no way is derogatory towards the accomplishments Russell achieved.
Also, I've talked with several coaches on different levels about power meets. Nearly unanimously they agreed that they do not like the idea of them at the high school level. They noted that on a high school budget it can be very costly. Also, they believe it is a large distraction for the young men. The most surprising answer I heard from many coaches was the fear of steroids and other performance enhancers. They say that at a young age that kids that are very competitive or believe they are the best and meet the reality that they are only good, but not the best get lured into the trap of these dangers.
To say that most schools that have the athletes to compete is very far fetched. From my personal experience there are a wide array of factors that come to this conclusion.
Congrats to all of these young mens' accomplishments. On any note, the numbers shown for their weight classes are great and they all deserve a great pat on the back for representing Eastern Kentucky well at the meet.

One states that the numbers are low unless it was in a smaller weight division, which it was later pointed out that it was.
The other states that this competition does not require a drug test which makes it the best meet for most schools since it won't require a drug test which is very costly for a high school program. The same post also stated that those were good numbers for those weight classes.
I don't see either of those as being derogatory.

Sounds to me like you have a beef with Adam!!!
My guess is that since you were there it means that most likely you were there with the team or part of the team.
I take offense to your statement of "don't even try and argue", and the "were you?" comment.
So that being said, I will be the adult in this conversation and just say that my statement about Adam's result was made about Adam (and the rest of the team by the way) based on as close to "1st hand being there" knowledge as possible and that is 'straight from him'.
So when I see him, I will ask him about your statement.
But regardless it is still a great "team" accomplishment and I for one am very proud of them.
Oh, and by the way, if you look at my first post it says, "Drew Abrams - Top 3 in class" which is exactly where "2nd" place falls!! Congrats Drew!!
