Huntington Wva @ Ashland 8-15
#1
This is Ashland’s final tune up before the season opener against Raceland. I watched the Jackson Ohio scrimmage and came away impressed with the young QB’s. Ashland will lean heavily early in the season on a stable of RB’s and an experienced O-Line. While Jackson was no slouch Huntington is the defending 4A State champs the largest class in WVA. Should be a huge test and give the Staff plenty to work on. Hope for a injury free game.

Huntington lost to Martinsburg in the state semifinals last year

My bad thought it was last season, anyway Huntington will be a huge test for the Tomcats.

Are they gonna play multiple QBs? I haven’t kept up this summer & I have no clue about the new replacements & young players. What are their names & class? And, does your comment about relying on the RBs mean that there won’t be much of a passing game?

I do know they still have some big time weapons in the backfield in Davis & Ashby, so, it wouldn’t be a bad idea, regardless. Just hoping for a LITTLE balance, at least. And, I think they still have Lyons at TE & a cpl solid WRs whose names escape me, at the moment. And, Davis is a threat at both RB/WR. Sorry to bombard you with questions. But, ty in advance for any info.

With a solid OL and multiple RB’s the QB won’t  be asked to win many games just manage the game and limit mistakes. Both QB’s see the field as of now neither has won the job and one is a Freshman the other is a Sophmore. I’m guessing the offense will try to stay somewhat balanced especially with so many weapons on the outside. Ashland will probably utilize the short passing game quite a bit early on to get their young QB’s some valuable experience.

Seems like Ashland has been coming back a little each year to what they once were. All kinds of tradition and I think they have the right coach in place to get them there. I look for Ashland vs. JC to be a good one! Good luck Tomcats !!

Watched most of the scrimmage, it was kind of slow. Ashland was conservative on the offensive end. Defense was solid sans a few plays. They played a couple of cycles of 10-10 with no one scoring. Then the 2nd teams/JV etc. went at it with Ashland scoring two or three times and Huntington scoring once. The varsity then played a few rounds live with the down markers. Each team had some moments but the only score was Ashland with a pick 6. I left after the freshman started lining up so I'm not sure what happened after that.

Ashland defensively can be very good, I believe they return 8 starters.
