Pike Central 87 Betsy Layne 74 (15th Region QF)
#1
Final from App Wireless Arena

Pike Central plays about as good a game as they could've imagined. They shots lights out from 3 and made a lot of great plays all game long.

Tough season ending loss for Betsy Layne. I really thought they'd win this one, but the Hawks matched BL's size and athleticism and made all the big plays.

Pike Central out played Betsy Layne in every aspect of this one. Awesome game from Stewart on both ends. Congrats to those kids.

Embarrassed to be a Bobcat after the poor display of sportsmanship tonight. It is getting really old and I have stopped even trying to defend the poor behavior.

I didn't like how the game ended either, but are we really even surprised at this point? Put Betsy Layne in a meaningful game (football or basketball) and if things aren't going their way, they almost always resort to to fighting. It's sad too, because Betsy Layne has some really great athletes and some fine folks within' their school system.

As for the game itself, I don't understand why Newsome didn't drop into a half court defense to slow the game down. Central continually broke down the full court and half court traps and it led to wide open looks the whole game for the Hawks.

Live by the sword.. Die by the sword..

BL played the frantic run and jump defense all year and good teams are able to take advantage of that. Good ball movement and composure pick that aggressive style apart.

I believe that initially it falls on the coaching staffs.  If kids/parents are allowed to push the limits, they will and they will often cross the line.  As Blackcat Alum stated, anytime BL is in a contested game tempers flair when things aren’t going their way.  I think it’s okay to play with a chip on your shoulder but you have to have discipline.  You don’t help your team when you’re getting tossed, we saw that play out in the “All-A” and in football season as well.  I’m still proud of the season BL had and I wish nothing but the absolute best for those kids moving forward.

I really liked this years BL team. Just a bad night. I think they have a good coach and the right people in place. Just didn’t show up ready to play.

Great job by Pike Central. They were on fire tonight.

Wow that was a fun game to watch. Congrats to BL on a great season and congrats to Pike Central on the win. Pike Centrals three headed monster really played huge and then Compton hit some huge shots too. Great game!

I disagree.  It doesn't fall on coaching.  Bl players were pushing and shoving the coaches that my friend falls on parents. Attitudes start at home.  Mine knows to not even question a coach he better never push a coach regardless of situation.

We all make mistakes and have probably allowed our anger to get the best of us in a competitive or heated moment, but this continually keeps happening with Betsy Layne when they compete in a meaningful game where things aren't going their way, so therefore it does partially fall on the BLHS coaches.

You've got it partially right. Behavior falls on the parents to a certain extent BUT come on now.........
Betsy Layne is a train wreck. Someone has to be there to help guide kids in the right direction and then you have Newsome that says "we are gong to fix that sh@t" on a live tv interview and others that take pride in fighting thats not really trying to help the problem. All the coaching moves lately have been nothing but getting people who can give ol JR some votes. They've run off Short, Hopkins, Johnson. All of which who were beginning to turn the programs around and trying to get some discipline there. Even the baseball coach who they named the field after took his kid to Pikeville Ive heard. Dont know if that one is true or not but thats the talk. I don't know if Jody Roberts can take the blame but his name is on the hires even though we know who pulls the strings. Maybe winning could fix all of that and make some people over look it. Newsome got brought in as this great coach by some of you guys on here to take them over the top and his record the year before was a losing one. I know now this may just start a bunch on here talking crap about all the other coaches but the truth hurts sometimes. This was the one chance Bl had to win it all and everyone knows it. Pikeville wouldve been a tough out but losing to Pike Central has to be a bad loss. Theyve had the same guys on that team for 3-4 years now. The holdback year helped them more than anyone. Good Luck to the kids but the adults are letting you down and thats the real truth and all the posts about whoever else fault it is will not change that. Im not posting another thing on here about this. I am biased but there is nothing on here that is not the truth. I'll let everyone else read the 100 posts that will follow this saying something different.

Jaden Stewart is going to be a problem over the next several years. He had 33 points tonight and was on fire from three. It’s unbelievable that he is only a freshman.

Betsy Layne needed to throw the ball into the post every possession but instead they settled for way too many jump shots. Obviously an embarrassing display at the end. Who knows what was being said out there but it’s inexcusable to shove an opposing player to the ground. It’s also ridiculous to have multiple players take off charging at the Pike Central team trying to start a fight. BL had a really good season but they ruined a large chunk of the good basketball they played this year with their attitudes.
#13
Well, another disappointing ending to a Betsy Layne season. At the end of the day, Betsy Layne didn’t have any depth to justify pressing a quick team like Pike Central. Coach Newsome ran off 4 players that would have helped this season. All the talk from most Betsy Layne fans when Newsome got hired was how “he’s going to change the culture” and this and that, well case in point last night when things got tough they broke down mentally.

BL should have made this into a half court game.
PC played really well and made BL pay for all the pressure they applied.
Good luck PC
Please beat that school that gets all the transfers from multiple schools eligible smh

I think being in the semifinals of the region 2 years in a roll is a major improvement from the last 8 years before!! Two straight Districts Championships!! I see a bright future in the program with the talent they have up and coming the pipeline is open unlike the keystone and the transfer portal open now!! I am just a sports fan not connected!! I understood they did lose couple players to crosstown rival this season!!

Former St. Patrick standout Jaylan Rigdon and Pike County Central one win from Rupp.

The opponent in the way is a really good Pikeville team.

Leading scorer Du Toit first appeared on PC roster last year as a SENIOR. Apparently taking advantage of 5th year.

But hey, Pikeville. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Betsy Layne has great talent on the basketball floor but the parents and attitudes is an embarrassment to the community. The coaches tried to keep them back they didn’t want that to happen but the parents were probably thrilled. This happens in football happens in basketball multiple times. The parents are already defending them saying PC was the bad guys lol. At what point does the Floyd County board of education get embarrassed? It’s almost every game the fans are ejected or the players are fighting or the refs took it lol. Someone is gonna have to say enough is enough and get control. This isn’t on the coaches I know they are embarrassed too and some of those people on that staff are great respectful people. But if parents are allowed to act like they do and cuss administration and have the state police on them multiple times it’s gonna filter down to the kids.

FYI…. Rigdon transferred here his freshman year (last year) from Maysville.  His dad was the head coach at a small school up there and tropes down to take an assistant job at PCC to work on his masters degree.  Dutoit just transferred in last year bc he has family down here.  The rest were born and raised in this area.  Even Rigdon had family that lived here.

I place 100% of the blame on the BL loss on Pike Central and Coach Ratliff. This team has grown and improved all season. He should be 15th region Coach of the Year. Nothing but respect for them.

Truth of the matter is, these two district championships are impressive. But with the hold back rule, and how it all turned out it was a given they would win this year. Imagine if the hold back rule would have been a thing 2 years ago when all the seniors was on Lawrence county. They would have won it the following year as well. Betsy Layne will more than likely go down from here considering half of their rotation will be graduating. Say what you want, but coach Newsome ran 4 players off he could have used this past season and maybe it would have been different result. But we’ll never know.

Very true!  Central out played, coached and hustled Betsy Layne for the majority of the night.  I would like to see Central’s shot chart, they took their time and worked to get great and usually wide open shots.  A good team effort and such a fun team to watch.

It falls on the coach and administration. One promotes it and the other supports it. Embarrassing display.

What kind of behavior do you expect from a bunch of mud creekers. Just plain and simple. Pike central kicked thier butts and made them like it. ?
