The Cumberlands 20 Bethel 19
#1
McKenzie, TN – Steady play early combined with gritty play late including a few key third down conversions and a field goal as time expired gave the Patriots a big 20-19 win over Bethel University on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium. The one point win marks the four game in the last five meetings that the game was decided by seven points or less. UC's victory over the Wildcats pushes them to 2-1 overall on the season.

UC would receive the opening kick and look very sharp on their opening drive. After Shon Jones returned the kickoff to the UC 43 yard line, the Patriots compiled an 11 play drive that took over four minutes off the clock before Austin Hatfield would punch in a Patriot touchdown on his only carry of the game, a one yard run. The point after by Joe Rose was good, giving UC an early 7-0 lead. UC and Bethel would then trade possessions throughout the first quarter.

It wasn't until mid-way through the second quarter when Bethel would find their way onto the scoreboard. Starting the drive on their own 47 yard line, the Wildcats would run over seven minutes off the clock on a 13 play drive capped by a Dalton McCann 30 yard field goal, cutting the lead to 7-3 Patriots. UC would go three and out offensively before pinning Bethel back on their own three yard line on a 56 yard punt by Devon McMillan with just about two minutes to play in the half. Bethel would run the clock down and go to the locker room trailing UC 7-3.

In the third, Bethel would get the ball first and would attempt to make something happen. After a personal foul penalty gave Bethel a first down, the pass from Sam Castronova intended for Devante Jimenez was picked off by Cole Genders, giving UC great field position starting on their own 49 yard line. The Patriots would put together a solid drive, gaining three first downs, but would stall out in the Wildcats' red zone as Rose would come in to convert on a 27 yard field goal, pushing UC back out front by a score of 10-3.

Bethel's next drive ended as their first of the half as Castronova's pass was picked off, this time by Jeremiah Baker, as he returned it all the way down to the Bethel three yard line. It only took one play for UC to add to their lead as Seph Burke would find pay dirt for another Patriot TD. Rose's PAT was good, pushing the score to 17-3. Bethel would respond quickly though. After a good kick return for the Wildcats that had them start the drive on the UC 48, it was two big catches, one by Jimenez for 19 yards and a 29 yard TD grab by Vonte Bates that cut back into the Patriot lead. The point after was good, making it 17-10 UC with just over five minute to play in the third.

UC would go three-and-out before punting it away, but a 65 yard punt by McMillan was negated by a 33 yard return by J'Kobi Reddick, giving BU the ball on their 38 yard line. On the ensuing drive, Bethel would convert a third down conversion along with two fourth down conversions, including a 4th and 15 as Castronova would find Bates again from 30 yards out for another TD. The extra point was blocked by the Patriots, keeping UC out front 17-16 entering the fourth quarter.

The opening play of the fourth spelled trouble for the Patriots as Coby Jones' pass intended for Joronnie Hinton was intercepted by Karrheem Darrington, giving Bethel the ball deep into Patriot territory on the UC 36 yard line. Nine plays later, after a big goal line stand by the Patriots, McCann would convert on another field goal, this one from 24 yards out to give the Wildcats their first and only lead of the game at 19-17 with just under 12 to play. UC would then put together a very nice drive, which included two big third down conversions by Jones with his feet, to push themselves into Bethel territory. The drive would unfortunately stall as the Patriots would have to punt it away.

Bethel would take over on their own 11 yard line with just over four minutes left in the game. UC's defense would hold though as Bethel would have to punt it away. It looked as if UC had pinned themselves into a corner, looking to convert a 3rd and 33. Jones would take to the air as Jalen Smith would make an incredible catch for 42 yards and a UC first down. UC would earn one more first down as time would run down all the way to 2.7 seconds left on the BU 14 yard line. A penalty on the Wildcats would move the ball to the nine yard line as Joe Rose would come in to attempt the game winning field goal. After Bethel attempted to ice the kicker, Rose would not be shook as he would drill the 26 yard field goal to give the Patriots the 20-19 win.

UC was led on the night offensively by Seph Burke who tallied 110 yards rushing on 23 carries and a TD. Coby Jones added 31 yards rushing while going 8-20 through the air for 87 yards with the one interception. Jalen Smith caught six of the eight passes in the game for 72 yards.

Defensively, UC's Chanco Estes had eight total tackles (four solo) with 1.5 tackles for loss. Murphy Hagan had seven total tackles, a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble while Jay Woods had six total tackles. Robbie Garvin added five total tackles (four solo) and 3.5 tackles for loss.

The Patriots have a bye week next week before traveling to Jacksonville, Florida on September 23rd to take on Edward Waters University in non-conference action. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
