Rowan County Football Hazing
#1
I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up on here yet. I'm satisfied it happens almost everywhere at some point. A lot of good players separate themselves from the game because of hazing and bullying at an early age. I don't think it is something to be taken lightly. This kind of behavior hurts the kids and the program. Saw it in the news earlier in the week and thought I would get your thoughts.

In my opinion it is ridiculous. I highly doubt this "hazing" was done with malicious intentions. If it was, then sure... fire the coach. But using freshmen on the scout team or having them carry equipment is not hazing. It is something that happens in every football program in America. I understand we live in a PC world today, but football is no place for it. Football is a man's game.

That being said, if players were stealing money or intentionally hurting younger players, then yes, that is hazing. Kick them off the team. Firing the coach seems like a little much.

Granted, this is the first I have heard of this story, but from the facts presented in the article I didn't feel it was warranted to fire him.

This in my opinion is KHSAA problem. Hear me out, If you play week 0 , 1 scrimmage, week 1, 2 scrimmages. To get ready for a season when pads go on that puts many more reps on a scout team. When numbers are where they are for most teams, many reps come against freshmen. Many more injuries will and have happened. KHSAA wants us to think more scrimmages or controlled practices against other teams will have more injury. Not the facts.

Varsity vs scout team is not hazing, this is what I get from the article. Money stolen in locker room, again not hazing. It is called theft. I have a hard time with the firing of a coach from this, with the facts presented.

KHSAA should allow 1 controlled practice with another team every 7 days of practice when pads are on and 2 scrimmages, regardless when your first game is. This would limit the reps against scout. Look for more limitations from KHSAA.

This is a garbage story.

I don't know the situation...maybe that freshman was preparing for varsity action that season. However I know mentioned in the story, there was a big difference in the treatment of freshmen players, then a sudden drop about missing money. This is a cover story and nothing more.

Another reason we are losing coaches. You have to be extra careful in today's football world when it comes to full contact! Match-ups in practice can cost you your job.

Just a sad, embarassing situation. Is there actually any documentation that any of this happened or is it just hearsay from a parent or two with an agenda?

Regardless of what did or did not happen in the locker room and beyond, and regardless of what is real bullying or just whining, the bottom line is that Coach Graham was fired because he failed to take MULTIPLE allegations seriously. If a player reports a bullying incident to a coach (or a teacher) that coach/teacher has a responsibility BY LAW to report the accusation to the next person up in the chain of command (immediate supervisor....in this case, the AD). This releases the coach/teacher from any repercussions and puts the burden on someone higher up the ladder.

*side note - Not sure how they conduct practices, but for 20 players to sustain concussions with most occurring in practices, this makes me scratch my head a bit....seems like kind of a high number*

This was my first thought.

I would assume it was a little more than pinning a freshman up against a senior in practice for this incident to take on the weight it has accumulated. There has to have been more evidence that has not been highlighted I would think.

I know some of the back story on this.....really driven by some parents upset by the lack of playing time in the Freshman class. Nothing more...nothing less. If anyone knows Ray Graham at all...then they would understand why these allegations are completely outrageous.

Parents with an "agenda" will ultimately be the death of youth and high school sports.

Who diagnosed these "concussions" is an important question as well. Just a mess. Parents like those are the reason football is dying in most places.

I agree, I've known Ray Graham for many years. Just a group of parents with a agenda. Good Luck to Ray. He will land on his feet running.
