This Week In Pikeville Panthers Football
#1
This has been a roller coaster week for Pikeville High School football. The week started off with the loss of Ross McCoy, former Panther running back / linebacker. Ross graduated in 2011 and was a good athlete. Mid-week brought the arrival of the State Championship rings. And then this morning brought the news of the passing of Bobby "Snab" Phillips. Unless you've been around the program for an extended period of time, you may not recognize the name. "Snab" was manager of the Panther football team for 46 seasons. There have only been 89 seasons in Pikeville's history and Snab has been taping ankles for over half of them. A childhood illness left Snab with a permanent limp, but anyone that was on the receiving end of a Snab pass will tell you the man was anything but handicapped!!! Had a mean jump shot, too! As illness crept back in the past couple of seasons, others have stepped in and assisted Snab with his duties, but things always seemed better when I'd find Snab sitting in his wheelchair outside the lockerroom at Hillard Howard Field on Friday night. Losing both Ross and Snab in the same week, feels like a piece of Pikeville football has passed along with them. Rest in peace, gentlemen. You both have left a legacy that will be tough to live up to. Forever Panthers.

Such a hard time to find joy. But they were instrumental in carrying on the Panther tradition. I have no doubt at all they would not want us to mourn, but celebrate. They both saw a lot and contributed a lot to what makes Pikeville football what it is. Rest in peace, gentlemen. We got this.

Ross was a great kid! He and my brother were very close back in High School. His parents are second to none! Snab is, by definition, a LEGEND! The fact that he wasn't elected to the HOF is a CRIME! Snab showed all of us what a TRUE PANTHER is! May they both rest in peace and prayers to their families and to this community I dearly love.
