Spring Valley (Wv.) 81 Boyd Co. 58
#1
SPRING VALLEY -- The crazy thing about wolves is they always travel in packs.
No matter who was leading the pack Monday night, Spring Valley's girls basketball team kept relentless team defensive pressure on Boyd County, forcing 25 turnovers en route to an 81-58 win over the Lions at the Wolves Den.
"That's what our press is supposed to do -- not necessarily get turnovers, but just wear on you," Spring Valley coach Bo Miller said. "They started turning it over because they got tired. You could tell they were a little fatigued."
The game featured a pair of Marshall University women's basketball commitments for the Class of 2015 -- Spring Valley's Madison Morris and Boyd County's Logan Fraley.
Morris had 21 points and 10 rebounds while Fraley ended the day with 19 points for the Lions, who were coming off a win over Fairland.
Morris spoke of the odd feel of Monday's friendly battle.
"It's fun to compete against her, but I don't really like playing against her because she's my good friend," Morris said. "Every time she makes a shot, I'm like 'Hey, good shot' and she was making everything tonight. It was good to play each other, though."
The difference came in the second half as Spring Valley's pressure defense disrupted the Lions' offensive flow.
Spring Valley outscored Boyd County 23-8 in the third quarter to increase the lead to 22 points and Fraley was limited to two second-half points.
"In the second half, we were able to get rebound, transition and we just beat them down the court," Miller said. "We got easy shots and they are a lot higher percentage."
While Fraley was bottled up in the second half, Spring Valley's offensive attack was balanced across the board. In addition to Morris' 21 points, Sarah Kelly contributed 18 points and 11 assists while Brooke Heck and Kassidy Lemons finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The game had a fast start.
Kelly jumpstarted the Timberwolves, scoring 13 points and dishing out four assists as Spring Valley ended the first quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 27-19 lead.
"I had a lot of fun," Kelly said. "This game was a lot more relaxed. We just went out and played and shared the ball."
Fraley scored Boyd County's first five points in the second quarter and the Lions cut the lead to 29-25, but Morris countered with eight consecutive points to push the advantage to double digits.
As the third quarter began Heck got on track offensively, notching nine points during an 18-4 run that put the game away.
"We like to try and spread it around," Miller said. "I don't care who scores, as long as we are moving the ball."
Boyd County also got 15 points from Alexis Lunsford, who scored 10 of in the second half.
Spring Valley travels to George Washington on Thursday in a matchup of two of Class AAA's top teams.
