Guys, since its state tournament week I decided to add a different touch to the article that I wrote this week. I actually wrote a little on the 1996 Paintsville team. However, I wrote about the bond that formed between our team and some from the 1996 Magoffin County team that we had to beat for a district and regional titles in 1995 and 1996.
The article is about how a few of their players celebrated the state championship with us. Check it out:

Really enjoy your articles on the Daily Independent website. As a former high school player (Raceland, early 90's) I have very vivid memories of our games with Paintsville....tough and very physical....especially the games @ Paintsville. The gym there always made me feel like we were playing in a deep hole, and I don't mean that in a bad way. With the bleachers only on one side, usually not an empty seat in the house and with the bench side against the gym wall, it was always one of the more imposing places I ever played.
Again, great work on the articles....can't wait for the book to come out.

Although basketball season is over, I am still going to try to get an article in the Ashland Daily once a week to give you guys a fix on basketball! This week I decided to write an article about the 1986/87 Paintsville Tigers and how a trip to the Beach Ball CLassic in Myrtle Beach helped pave the way for their success later in the year. Check it out:

The tradition of Paintsville over the years is being carried on with a lot of hard work. This is what happens when players that have been at a school and remain loyal and proud of that and their community they were joined with from the start of their career. A bond that can't be replaced. Once again J.R. Has made his high school and the area surrounding them proud.

While sitting at the District tournament.I was listenng to a few older gentleman talking about some of Paintsvilles teams. They mentioned to me Larry Robinson and how he was a very good player for Paintsville. He was on the team that last beat Meade Memorial before the consolidated to make Johnson Central. They just said he was one of the best players that played in the late 60's.I know Larry.Of course he is older now but I think he could still beat me in basketball.Wonder why or if he is in the Paintsville hall of fame.Im sure you can find out JR,

I don't know a lot about Larry's carrer, I do know he is 24th all-time on Paintsville's scoring list. He scored 1,104 points, but I'm sure he scroed a few more. I am missing 2 box scores from his sophmore year, 1 from his junior year, and 2 from his senior year.
As for the Hall of Fame, I am not really sure what the requirements are for induction. I'm not in it either, but I am sure after this research is completed more former basketball players will be included in it!

Hey everyone, the latest article that I have written for the Ashland Daily was posted on their online edition today. I had interviewed John Pelphrey for the book and he gave us some great stuff. So I also decided to interview Christian Laettner and get his take on a few things. The result was the latest article written on "The Shot" from the 1992 Duke/Kentucky game.

Ok J.R., now your just bringing back bad memories. I still remember that day & where i was at and everything. Heart breaking moment in KY Basketball History for many fans.
I really enjoyed reading what both where thinking and what that moment meant to them. I still hate Laettner though lol.
Along with many other fans, that is one of my favorite UK teams of all time.

You know, the interesting thing about talking to John and to Christian, there have been many interactions over the years with players from Kentucky and Duke who were involved in that game. But the surprising thing to me is that it is never brought up by either side in conversation. Heck, John Pelphrey's son played on a baseball team that included former Duke player Antoni Lang's son and the game was never mentioned. I just found that interesting!

That is very weird that they did or have not discussed the game & it is a small world.
How about some of the big games you played in Rupp have you had many discussions with any of the guys you competed against (Lex Cath players come to my mind, as has to be one the top Ind performances in state touney history you had that morning)?

It has been a while since I have written an article for the Ashland Daily. For this one, I decided to write one in honor of Veteran's Day. The subject of the article is a Paintsville alumnus and a U. S. Naval Academy graduate. Hope you guys enjoy!!

Yeah, Capt. Cooper took over just after in July 1945. I would still like to know more about his service. I've researched some other men who played at Paintsville and fought in World War II, just unbelievable what they saw and went through!
