Top Ten 1a games of the week 8-24
#1
I will try to do this each week of the season for you all. I understand some of you may not agree with the order or what have you, but after you get through about the first 5 or 6 games in 1a it is really hard to rank the rest usually.

That being said this is my top ten games in 1a for the very first week of football, which starts this coming Friday.

1) Mayfield Cardinals #1 vs Fort Campbell Falcons #10 in 3a.

This should be a great game. The Cards finished the season last year as
the state champions, with a record of 14-1. The Falcons finished the year
in the 3rd round with a record of 9-3. The Falcons and Cards return a lot
from last year. The Falcons have been very successful of late winning
state titles in 2a in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The Cards also have been on
a roll of their own. They have been in the last 4 state title games in 1a &
won the title in 2010 and 2012. This game has been hyped since it was
announced.

2) Louisville Holy Cross #10 vs DeSales #7 in 2a.
This should be another great game. This would be a great one even if the
two teams were not ranked, as this is a rivalry. The Holy Cross Cougars
finished the 2012 season with a disappointing record of 3-9 but showed
a lot of grit in their final test of the year at Mayfield. DeSales finished the
2012 season in the semi finals with a record of 9-5. The stadium should
be rockin for these two teams.

3) Bullitt East #18 in 5a vs Frankfort #4
This should be another good game to gauge the standings in 1a.
Frankfort went above their heads in classification in this one. Bullitt East
finished the 2012 campaign with a mark of 4-7 and should be looking to
right the ship this year. Frankfort finished their season with dashed hopes
at Beechwood in the third round with a mark of 11-2.

4) Bath County #18 in 3a vs Parish #14
Paris is on the fringes of making it onto the list of top 10 1a teams. This
game could be something they are able to point to in order to make their
case for that ranking in the state. Bath County is in a similar position in
3a and needs every win to get them the respect they desire.

5) Pikeville Panthers #7 vs Prestonburg Blackcats #16 in 2a
This should be a barn burner here folks. These 2 eastern Ky teams are
old hats at this one. If anyone watched the video on BGR after Pikeville
upset Raceland in the playoffs last year, then you know how pumped this
bunch gets on Fridays. Pikeville would like to prove they belong with the
top dogs in 1a in this state. Pburg is in a similar situation. They are a
storied program that wants to earn the respect of the rest of the state
once again. This game could help both programs to prove they belong.
I can feel the tension now. Pikeville finished the 2012 season with a
mark of 7-6 and have everything returning. Pburg finished 2012 with
a record of 8-4.

6) East Carter 3a vs Raceland #8
This game could benefit East Carter more than Raceland this year. East
Carter finished 2012 at 2-8 and therefore needs every win they can get.
They should be licking their chops and thinking about how they could
possibly get an easy win against a small school. On the other hand
Raceland had success this past year and wants to toughen the boys
up for a deeper run at state. The Rams finished 2012 with a mark of
9-3. I expect the Rams should be looking at this in a one game at a
time type mentality to avoid in bumps in the road, like the one that
stopped them last year.

7) Walton-Verona #13 in 2a vs Bellevue #12
Both of these teams have something to prove in this game as they are
both just outside the top 10 in their perspective classifications. This
game could go a long way towards helping either to move into the top
10. I think Bellevue should be the hungry ones though due to the fact
they lost this one last year 6-21. I saw improvement in Bellevue last
year and they gave Beechwood a tough way to go in their game.
Bellevue finished the season last year at 7-5. Walton-Verona finished
2012 at 10-3.

8) Russellville Panthers #5 vs Trigg County Wildcats from 2a
The Panthers were a very stout 1a team last year and return a lot.
The Panthers finished their season at 8-4 at the hands of Ky Country Day.
Trigg showed lots of signs of improvement in the 2012 season in the
latter half and finished with a mark of 5-6. The Panthers will be looking
to prove they belong in the top 5 with this game. The Panthers won this
one last year 25-14.

9) Ky Country Day #9 vs Shawnee 2a
This is a regular game for these two teams. The KCD Bearcats won this
one last year 35-9. They will however be without the help of their all
everything qb due to graduation. This will give Shawnee the reason
to believe they belong. KCD finished their season in the 3rd round last
year at the hands of the defending state champs. KCD finished with a
mark of 11-2. Shawnee on the other hand finished 2012 with a mark of
1-7 and will look to improve that one game at a time.

10) Caverna vs Eminence
The Colonels finished 2012 with a disappointing mark of 1-10 at the
hands of the defending state champs. Eminence finished 2012 with a
respectable record of 7-4. This would be a good chance for the upstart
Colonels to improve upon last years mark.

Good idea. Since I no longer live in the area, it would be nice to see previews of Raceland and opponents each week.

#3
Good job on the preview. Looking forward to this each week
#4
Thank you 5-0. I am really surprised that we are not getting any more comments on this. I figured we would get some predictions and also get some that think the order should be shuffled. I guess the quietness means I did alright.
#5
Love this idea! Keep up the good work 55!
#6
I love the idea too. Good stuff 55.
#7
Thanks guys, if you have any inside info that you think would be useful in the future just shoot me a pm. Esp you guys on the east side because you are seeing teams that I don't get to see until too late. I want to be as fair about this as I can.
#8
I would put the Nicholas v. Bracken game in there maybe at the 10 spot ahead of Caverna v. Eminence, not really sure what Eminence has but they usually do a pretty good job over there. Probably could go either way with what you have.
#9
That's what I'm saying. It just gets hard in 1a after the first few games. Esp when you don't know all the rivalrys. I was basing mostly on their power rankings and polls. I recall over the past few years Eminence has been cracking the top 10 pretty regularly.
#10
IMO pikeville and p-burg should be in the top 3 this game has it all 2 teams that are physical and have something to prove plus it's in eastern ky what could be better

Don't know that much about the teams listed, other than what Mayfield accomplished last season; however there is one game from the East that will be a barnburner. Both have great tradition, and both are physical, both love to beat each other, and that is the Pikeville Panthers, and the Prestonsburg Blackcats. I think this is the Panthers year to represent the East. Pikeville by at least 7.
Again, good job 55. Looking forward to this.

I bet that will be one heck of a game. I knew their were long time storied programs and being from the same general area, I figure there is lots of reason for bragging rights. I can see how that one may be rated a little low. Pburg will rise again some day. I know they gave us one heck of a game once upon a time in Louisville. It came down to one more made extra point than the other had.

I remember that game, just like it was yesterday. I thought Pburg would win that one, so very close. One heck of a game, for sure!

I can't believe you mysonis55 you forgot about Williamsburg playing Knoxville halls this week :HitWall::HitWall::HitWall:
#15
No, I didn't forget you 64. Check out my thread on top 10 1a games for the week. I just voted on here.
#16
Sorry about that, I thought I clicked on a different thread. I don't know how I wound up here. I didn't forget them, they don't play until next week correct?
#17
64, I guess I did miss your beloved adopted team. I don't know how that happened. I for sure would have put that one in here. I was searching hard when I settled on some of these.
#18
Holy Cross vs DeSales. The Colts can name the score in this one. It won't be close. Holy Cross is getting the numbers up, but there are very young. They struggled in their scrimmage against Christian Academy. Give them a couple of years.
#19
Mayfield is always the top game in 1A. They are far and away the best progam and there is no team below 4A that can play with them.

lol I'd take Central everyday of the week.

Forget what he says Colt. He is a Mayfield hater.

Confusedinglepar are you telling me an everybody that mayfield is the only team you pull for.or have you adopted every team in the west papa :biglmao:
#23
Ive been rooting for the Cards since I was old enough to. I do root for others when they are not playing us. What is E's deal. He seems like he has the roids or something. I can help it if we do well, he needs to get over it or find a better team than us to root for.
#24
Lets hope that the RAMS can keep their nose to the grindstone and finish well this year.
