Big East schools Marquette, St. John's, Georgetown, Providence, DePaul, Seton Hall, and Villanova will join Atlantic 10 schools Xavier and Butler to form a new conference in college basketball. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Marquette prepares to leave Big East for new conference
Creighton, Virginia Commonwealth, Dayton, and St. Louis are looking to join the new conference. The only roadblock is how Georgetown decides to leave the Big East. Notre Dame is also "interested" in the new conference, but far from thinking about pulling out of the ACC. The schools want to move fast before the A10 finalizes their TV deal with CBS, NBC and ESPN. The only non-Catholic universities would be VCU and Butler.

It's smart that these guys got together and did this...
none of them have any real football aspirations and this allows them to maintain their automatic bid in basketball.
If they waited and some of them jumped ship on the Big East individually they would have to look at possibly going independent if they didn't get picked up if the BE ended up dissolving.

I thought this move was a perfect example of how the Big East lost it's identity. The Big East was a basketball first conference, it always has been and always should have been. The SEC, Big Ten, Pac 12, and Big 12 are football conferences with a few strong basketball schools. You can't compete with those conferences for football, when you're a basketball conference.
