SHELBYVILLE, KY. — Collins, a relatively new high school in only its third year of existence, made it three wins in a row over crosstown rival Shelby County, but this time Collins had to sweat it out before claiming a 34-33 victory Friday night.

Lawson Page, a junior quarterback, hit Landon Forrest on an 11-yard pass in the right front part of the end zone with 3:00 remaining to wipe out a 33-28 lead Shelby County had taken late in the third quarter. Forrest’s catch capped a 12-play, 77-yard drive that gave the Titans (4-2) the win.

After it was over, Page let out a big sigh of relief.

Shelby County was split into two schools to create Collins three years ago. In their first two meetings, Collins rolled to 49-7 and 39-0 victories. This time, Shelby County led 20-14 at half, but Collins rallied in the second half to stay unbeaten in this growing rivalry.

“That’s the way crosstown rivalries should be,’’ Collins coach Jerry Lucas said. “There was great enthusiasm and excitement on both sides. There was big play after big play, and then a good defensive play by teams. These seniors were freshmen together at Shelby County three years ago.”

Shelby County (4-2) was led by junior quarterback Zach Shipley, a son of Rocket head coach Todd Shipley. Shipley, the Class 2-A champion in the 300-meter hurdles last spring, showed his speed in the first half.

He scored on a 5-yard run to tie the game at 7. He returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown to put the Rockets ahead. And he crossed the goal from 48 yards out to give his team a 20-14 halftime lead.

“He had a good game,’’ coach Shipley said. “As a coach I was happy (the way Zach played). As a father, I was even happier.’’

In the end, it was Page — a good friend of Zach Shiplely — who made the winning play.

“Forrest looked me in the eye and said he wanted the ball,’’ Page said. “He was in the front corner of the end zone with a man behind him. Somehow he got open. He’s an amazing athlete. If I had thrown a bad pass, he would have caught it.’’http://www.courier-journal.com/article/2...t|Sports|s

Lawson Page's 11-yard touchdown pass to Landon Forrest with 3 minutes to play gave Collins a 34-33 victory over county-rival Shelby County in a back-and-forth football game Friday night in front of a crowd of a few thousand at Titans Stadium.

Page, the junior quarterback, passed for 218 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 33 times for 98 yards and another score as Collins improved to 3-0 against the Rockets.

This one wasn't as easy as the first two Titans' victories over Shelby County, though. Collins, which beat the Rockets 39-0 last year and 49-7 in 2010, had to rally from deficits of 14-7, 20-14, 27-21 and 33-28 stay perfect in the series.

In defeat, Shelby County senior quarterback Zach Shipley accounted for four touchdowns for the Rockets. He rushed for two, passed for one and returned a punt 82 yards for another TD.

Also for Shelby County, senior wideout Michael Barry had five catches for 105 yards and one touchdown and senior wingback Chase Manica rushed for 51 yards and one TD.

The Titans (4-2, 1-0) play at district-rival North Oldham next Friday night, when the Rockets (4-2) host North Bullitt in its district opener.
