St. Henry senior Abbey Bessler said Saturdayâs 12 hours of volleyball, culminating with the schoolâs first Touchstone Energy All âAâ Classic state championship, was a day like no other in her playing career, and she had cake icing on her face to prove it.
âThis was definitely different,â Bessler said. âAnd the cake is really good.â
Coach Maureen Kaiser called it a history-making day for the Crusaders, who beat Louisville Presentation, 25-11, 25-13 to complete a sweep of the competition at Mid America Volleyball Center in Jeffersontown.
âItâs our second state championship. We also won back in the day,â said Kaiser, who was a freshman at St. Henry when the Crusaders won the 1981 Kentucky High School Athletic Association state title. âI thought we played really well today and Iâm glad the girls won it.â
The Crusaders began play at 8:30 a.m. and finished a little after 8:30 p.m. while going 6-0 and winning every set. Moments after St. Henry (20-6) put down the clinching point, Kaiserâs players shoved a celebratory cake in her face.
âItâs got vanilla icing and cream cheese inside of it,â said Kaiser, in her 22nd season as Crusaders coach.
Bessler, a Xavier University recruit, recorded a team-high 12 kills and was named tournament most valuable player. Rachel Fortner, heading to the University of Dayton, had 14 assists. She was named all-tournament along with senior teammate Cheyenne Tobler, whose sister, freshman Janelle Tobler, sparked the team with aces.
âWe communicated very well, and our passing was on, and our hitting and setting was good,â Bessler said.
Tenth Region champ Bishop Brossart finished third in pool play. The Mustangs rallied to defeat Lexington Christian 21-25, 25-20, 25-23 in the consolation quarterfinals and came back to beat Burgin 23-25, 25-20, 25-21 in the semifinals. There was no consolation final.
