Beechwood and Bellevue both have the tiger as their mascot, but Beechwood proved Friday that it’s the king among Northern Kentucky cats.
Beechwood scored on its first six possessions and coasted to a convincing 49-20 home victory on senior night.
With the win, Beechwood (4-3) extended its winning streak against Bellevue to 10 games dating back to 2005, and few of those wins have been close games. The game marked the start of the Class 1A, District 4 schedule, and Beechwood once again is in a favorable position for district playoff seeding.

“We did some really good things up front, and I think our kids executed really well,” Beechwood coach Noel Rash said. “When we do that, we’re a pretty darn good football team.”
The rain in Fort Mitchell held off until halftime, but Beechwood’s offensive downpour began just after the opening kickoff. The team needed only three plays and 59 seconds to cover 60 yards. Junior running back Mitch Thomas ran into the end zone from 7 yards to put Beechwood on the board.
On Beechwood’s next possession, Thomas scored on the first play from scrimmage by scampering 63 yards for another touchdown.
Beechwood scored 31 first-half points on only 20 plays. The team relied mostly on the run but intermingled several passing attempts to keep the Bellevue defense on its heels. Junior Cameron Lane and senior Max Nussbaum both took snaps under center, and both had success running when no receivers were open.
“It’s nice to have guys that run and play hard-nosed football at the same time,” Rash said. “When you have two backs doing that for you, it opens up the passing game.”
Beechwood also was able to limit the effectiveness of Bellevue junior running back Dylan Huff, who entered the game as the top rusher in Class 1A. Huff once again led Bellevue with 196 yards, including a 78-yard breakaway rush in the final seconds of the first half. But Beechwood adjusted to Huff’s sweeping runs and limited Bellevue’s running attack to modest gains.
The win marked a fitting end to Beechwood’s home schedule. The Tigers have won three straight games but must close out the regular season with three road contests, including a pair of district games.
“This program has always been about that and found ways to get it done, even when people said we couldn’t,” Rash said. “This is going to be one of those years where people say we can’t, and we’re going to try and get it done.”
Beechwood outgained Bellevue 460 yards to 301. Nussbaum finished with a game-high 200 rushing yards and two scores on 16 carries. Thomas added another 105 yards on the ground.
The loss marked the first time Bellevue has lost this year when Huff runs for at least 150 yards.
After a 1-3 start, Beechwood is above .500 for the first time this season and has its eyes on another deep run into the playoffs. Beechwood will focus on its game against Dayton next week beginning Monday, but the seniors will soak in their final win on their home turf.
“It’s good to get back to .500 and play Beechwood football again,” Nussbaum said. “We’re getting better every week. We’ve just got to keep on going.”

I still say Beechwood has a good run in them at the end of the year.

i still think frankfort gets past the pawprint this year, not because beechwood is bad, just frankfort looks pretty good

Frankfort is good, and I agree. I think Beechwood gives them a fight though.

agreed, if beechwood was completely healthy, it'd be a different story

I haven't kept up with them much this year. Who are they missing right now?

Really respect Beechwood but i am kinda pulling for Frankfort. Closer to home since we have to travel this year. Both Mayfield and Frankfort run a spread offense and both of their Qbs are playing really well. Think the difference will be who has the better D.Jonathan Jackson might be the difference in the game if the two meet Still think that a healthy Beechwood will be a tough game for both Mayfield or Frankfort. Has Frankfort played anyone higher than 3a other than Franklin? I know that Lexington Christian is usually a power in 2a and that was a good win for you guys

Bellevue must be doing something right. We in Mayfield have seen Beechwood pretty regularly over the past few years and we know they have a very stingy defense. I noticed on here that Bellevue put of 300 yards and had a back rush for 150. That is impressive.
