Here's the second hand info I got:
- Typical Haywood scrimmage with Ten Plays and alternate, vanilla offense, just work on the basics with a few passes.
- Belfry scored 3 Times in the Varsity Portion, Boyd failed to score.
Offense
- Carr: Very surprising. Gained size, gained speed. Looked good at FB and HB.
- J. Johnson: Gained Size, ran stronger and tougher, may have lost a step though. Still looked good save a dropped TD pass.
- Hatfield: Suprise of the scrimmage. Runs pissed off. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at FB with Carr/Johnson at HB
- Sani: Looked good running the offense and throwing the ball. Had a couple big plays/TD's dropped. Threw a TD pass.
Defense
- Francisco: Looked good at DE.
- Hatffield: Lightnig quick up front. Wreaked havoc.
- Mullins: Already a big kid, looks like he has added mass and strength
- Ghormley: Looks a little more trim, but looked quicker moving around the field
Boyd County:
- Good size across the board, but didn't have many threats at the Skill Positions
- Not alot of speed, couple backs that ran hard, just not much room to run.
Interesting Note:
- Keith May was apparently at the scrimmage accompanied by a large contingent of Hawks Footbal Players.

Keith May Pike Central new coach ?

Keith May can attend every Belfry practice this year and him and his Hawks still stand no chance..

Thanks for the information EKU. Hopefully others will be able to add more detail.

Sounds like last nights scrimmage with Russelll and Lawrence County.

What I expected from Belfry. Boyd Co. was very sloppy on offense. They did a better job of containing the run than I expected, but the only reason the Pirates did so bad on the passing game was their failure to catch the ball, not a single Lion was even close to threatening a receiver. I saw Boyd Co. throw 2 passes with the varsity on the field...1 near interception and the other was intercepted. Had this been an actual game Belfry would have made short work of it. I'd like to see Belfry run their real plays. Good luck to both teams.

What little bit of it I watched the Pirates looked pretty good. I believe they will be alright in the QB position and the defense is hard hitting as usual. Is it definite Sani playing both ways. If so, How are they on the depth chart at QB.

I think this was expected. Good luck to both teams this season.

They did not.
Dropped passes are a HUGE concern for this team this season. Belfry has the QB to put it on the receivers, they have guys with enough speed to get open, but if you can't make a catch it is the same as a run stopped for no gain.
Belfry's running game does not have the personnel to be geared towards the big play like teams in the past. They key to this team is to have that threat of the big play in the form of the passing game. If the players can't secure the football then those are TD's and conversions that will be missed,

If Carr is as promising as it sounds, Robinson out wide could be an option. Showed good hands last year. JJ will may able to break some long runs IMO.

I beleieve the pirates will surprise you in their running game. Sani done a good job in running the option and that will give the big play potential for the Pirates. I think they will be fine when it comes to big plays in the running game. And Eku your right, the dropped passes willl be an issue, it al\ways has been. whether its been the QB not getting it in the right spot or the recievers not making the catches the passing game has always posed a problem for the Pirates. Lets hope that all changes this year.

Lighten up Francis, it is the first scrimmage. They dropped a few balls but they will be fine.
No personnel to make the big play? Are you serious? Dixon is gone, but throw Warren into that backfield and I have to say I disagree with you there. Warren looks to me like he could be the prototypical triple option QB. They could have ran the option for all they wanted last night. You will see some huge gains from that play this season, both from Warren and either HB. Not to mention Carr looks awfully good at FB and has some big play potential.
I personally think they will be very explosive, especially after seeing them on the field.

They will have to pull in those catches and help out gthe running game so the defenses wont be setting up in the box.

Did I say that?

I said:
"Belfry's running game does not have the personnel to be geared towards the big play like teams in the past." Belfry will always be able to bust the big play, especially with the way defenses have to stack the box. My concern lies in thinking about Breathitt County, Bell County, and Central who have enough team speed to account for a single missed assignment.
There is no Doug Howard, David Jones, Matt Maynard, Dustin May, or even for that matter Thomas Varney. Guys who could break a 5 yard gain into a 55 yard gain with a little wiggle and top end speed.I see a host of backs who are extremely talented at getting those 10-15 yard gains, but are not true home run threats like guys of the past.
Does Belfry have to have this to win? Of course not. There is no better team in 3A at grinding out drives and giving you a death by a thousand cuts. Would the potential of the big play give Belfry a better chance of getting over the hump against Central, of course.
Thinking back to the Howard/Jones teams, or for that matter the Dustin May/Ivan Lee teams who fell just short, you knew on any given play there was a chance Belfry could get behind the defense and house it, all it took was one missed tackle or one guy getting sucked in on a playfake. Don't know if this team has that X factor on the ground, but with what is certain to be man coverage on defense and a QB who can put the ball where it needs to be I can't help but think that they do have that opportunity through the air each time Sani runs play action.
I am excited to see what this team does, specifically with an athlete like Sani who has the potential to be the best fit at QB Belfry has had in decades.

Coach Haywood moved the players around quite a bit, showed nothing out of the ordinary, played everyone...now having said that...This team has tremendous talent and skill.I thought Carr showed he can be a dual threat at fullback or halfback,Hatfield is going to be a Beast,Sani...He showed he can and will be the Man,JJ and Robinson are solid. Can waite to see this team find their Identity...Cant waite till the season starts!!!

Trenity could be a big play threat out of the backfield. As far as dropped passes, who was guilty? I was there and only remember seeing Justin Johnson (a halfback, who everyone including him knows has trouble catching the ball and has worked on it) ... Francisco, Messer, and C. Johnson can catch the football.

Hey 0304,
Since you were there, what guys played on the O-line other than Jude, Taylor, May? How did they look?
Saw a couple pics of the scrimmage on Facebook, and I must say Carr looks impressive in his pads.

Carr carried a few FB runs for chunks, but Hatfield and May were also beasts at FB and I can remember Carr having one carry at HB, and it was a 6 point scoot.
Starting offensive line was Taylor, Jude, May, Macky Francis, and Drew Mullins. Mike Barnes came in at tackle for Mullins a few plays in. I'd say the first four are pretty solidified. Taylor, Jude, and May looked like men among boys I watched Zach Taylor several times push lineman 20+ yards down the field and not stopping until the whistle blew. Macky Francis also looked very good. Barnes look like he gets a little tired and Drew Mullins is good but needs work. I'd say with 12 days to go until season's begin that 4 of the line spots are solved with the tackle position up for grabs. Let's not forget if something happens with Macky, Tuffy Willis can play center.

^ Who is Wofman? I must admit a DL of Duty and May at tackles and Barnes at NG would be very formidable against the run.
Glad to hear Carr has really improved. All of the running backs need to improve in running physical and vertical IMO. Hopefully the scrimmage against Hazard will be helpful this upcoming week.
Would really like to see Haywood settle in on his 5 olineman by Week 1.

I think he means wolfman? And its richard nelson. And a DL like that could keep a team from having more than 75 yards rushing a game.
Im kinda curious if anybody else watched Robinson or even payed attention to him because i might be mistaken but he scored on a long run too. But no one has mentioned him.
