Warriors squeak out 5-4 win over McCreary

Somerset — Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, visiting McCreary Central had a slight edge over Southwestern, as they held a 4-3 lead over the homestanding Warriors.

But Alex Eaton’s Warriors would not let that slight edge affect them, as they plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to grab a 5-4 victory in the opening round of the 48th District Baseball Tournament last night at Warrior Stadium.

With the come-from-behind victory over McCreary, Southwestern earned a spot in tonight’s championship game of the tournament, where they will face the Wayne County Cardinals in Monticello. The Warriors also earned a spot in next week’s 12th Region

Baseball Tournament, which will get underway next week in Danville.

Southwestern did come away with the hard-fought victory, but the Warriors did not score their first run of the night until the fifth inning, when they plated a pair of scores to break a 3-0 lead that the Raiders had for much of the night.

“I’m proud of how the guys fought and battled the whole way through,” began Eaton, who will coach in his second district championship game in as many years. “We just can’t go four or five innings without scoring. We’ve got to come out and play like it’s our last game, because at some point, it’s going to be.”

“With that being said, these guys will get a chance to win a district championship and play in the regional tournament.”

Southwestern, who began the bottom half of the seventh frame trailing 4-3, kicked off the final inning rally with a double to the left field wall from eighth-grader

Trevor Howard. On the very next at-bat, junior Logan Starnes hit a double of his own, which allowed Howard to score to tie the contest up at 4-4.

A sacrifice bunt from senior Ricky Shepherd then moved Starnes to third base. The following batter, senior Zack Turpin, was walked, loading the bases up for senior Bradley Logsdon. The senior came up clutch for his team, as Logsdon hit a sacrifice fly to left field to allow Starnes to score, giving Southwestern a 5-4 win over the Raiders.

The second-year Warrior skipper was pleased with the performances of Howard and Starnes. Howard, at the plate, finished the game going a perfect 4-for-4, which included two doubles and an RBI. Starnes came into the pitch for Turpin in the fifth inning and pitched well, giving up zero hits in three innings in his winning performance. Starnes also did well at the dish, finishing with three hits and two RBI’s.

“Logan did an excellent job on the mound tonight,” praised Eaton. “Logan’s been our go-to-guy when we get into trouble. He kept us in the game. Trevor had a huge game as an eighth-grader and was a spark plug for our entire team.”

Senior Dusty Phelps chimed in with a pair of hits, while senior Elijah Hainey and Logsdon each finished with a hit in the Warrior victory.

With the victory, Southwestern upped their record to 25-12 on the season. The Warriors will return to action this evening, playing number one seed Wayne County in the 48th District Baseball Championship game at 7:30 p.m. at Wayne County High School.

The Warriors, the number two seed, will get a chance to win their fifth straight 48th District title tonight against the Cardinals, who defeated the Monticello Trojans last night. Southwestern has won four consecutive district banners since 2008, including two titles where the Cardinals were the Warriors' opponent.
