Woodford County 50 vs.Madison Southern (at Alumni Coliseum, EKU) 45 11th Region

RICHMOND â The only numbers that Jay Lucas cared about Monday were 50-45.

That was the score of his Woodford County team's victory over upset-minded Madison Southern in Monday's opening game of the girls' 11th Region basketball tournament in McBrayer Arena.

"At this point in the year ... that's all you do â survive and advance," Lucas said. "We're very happy that we got to the next round."

The Yellowjackets (22-11) will take a four-game winning streak into Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinals.

Chelsey Ford led the winners with 13 points and five steals. Shelby McDonald added 12 points, four steals and four assists. Jessica Morgan totaled nine rebounds, four blocks and four points.

Kristen Hayes had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Madison Southern (11-19), which lost 72-44 to Woodford on Feb. 6.

The Eagles made the rematch close by outscoring Woodford 27-12 from the three-point line. Six of the Southern three-pointers came from subs.

Kelley Freeman went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, Briana Lanham shot 2-for-4 and Samantha Parms was 1-for-4.

"We had to overcome them making nine threes," Lucas said. "I thought defensively, late, we were very good. We went halfcourt man-to-man and did a real good job of clamping them down in the last two-and-a-half, three minutes, when the game was still on the line. And we made some shots on the other end."

Woodford took an 18-7 lead early in the second quarter.

Southern won the rest of the half 16-5 to forge a 23-all tie.

The Eagles took a 28-26 lead when Rachel Ramey scored on a fast break with 5:36 left in the third quarter.

Woodford scored the next 10, but Southern battled back. The game was tied at 42 early in the fourth quarter.

"They stuck with us," said McDonald, a sophomore guard. "I thought we were finally going to get a bigger lead on them."

The Jackets finally did, scoring the next eight points.

McDonald assisted on a Ford fast-break bucket.

Moments later, the same combination worked, although McDonald didn't get the assist because Ford blew the layup before sticking in the rebound shot.

After each team turned over the ball twice, McDonald intercepted a Southern inbounds pass, which led to a put-back by Hannah Morgan.

McDonald added two free throws with 29 seconds left to push the lead to 50-42.

"I tried to stay positive and confident, and know that they were going in," McDonald said.

Now, Woodford is going on.
