Sophomore Dillon Pulliam scored 25 and senior Caleb Ford hit for 23 as the Harrison County Thorobreds defeated the Pendleton County Wildcats 73-61 Friday night on the Hilltop.
Even with the two big scorers leading the way, at least two other Breds made huge contributions to the victory. Junior guard Scott Kendall played his best game of the season as he limited his turnovers especially in the second half and pitched in 14 points as well.
âScott had a really good second half,â Coach Mike Reitz said after the game. âWe need him to continue to play this way as we head into tournament time.â
Senior guard Nick Slucher was also key to the victory as he was responsible, in large part, for Pendleton Countyâs Mason Monroeâs struggles. Slucherâs defense was a factor in Monroeâs one-for-10 field goal accuracy in the second half after a four-for-eight first half.
Monroe did lead the Wildcats in scoring with 20 as he made 12 trips to the charity stripe and made 10 of them.
Pendleton County trailed throughout the game as Harrison County outscored them from the field and out rebounded the Wildcats by a 32-18 margin.
Pendleton County committed fewer turnovers and also made 30 trips to the foul line to 24 for Harrison County.
One of the factors in the Harrison County victory was a technical foul called on Wildcat coach Chad Simms as he was visibly upset over a non call near the end of the third period with his team trailing 54-47.
Harrison County pushed the lead to 13 at 60-47 before the Wildcats rallied.
Somewhat like the district tournament last year, Harrison County was only successful on seven of 13 free throws in the last quarter as Pendleton County fouled after every missed shot.
Unlike last year, the Wildcats could not capitalize on the misses and Harrison County pulled away for the 12-point victory.
Reitz was also complimentary of sophomore Grant Carr, who came into the game in the second half and handled the Pendleton County pressure. The rebounding margin was a team effort as Pulliam led the way with 10 and junior Jordan Martin grabbed seven.
The win improved Harrison Countyâs record to 12-10 while Pendleton County dropped to 12-9. The Thorobreds will next travel to Bishop Brossart on Wednesday to face the 15-5 Mustangs in a big 10th Region game. They then travel to Nicholas County on Friday for a girl/boy doubleheader with this district rival. The girlsâ game begins at 6 p.m. and the boys follow at 8 p.m. This is homecoming for Nicholas County.
