The 6-foot-4, 295-pound Smith anchored a line that opened holes for an offense that ground out more than 4,000 yards rushing and 5,000 yards total.
Smith, the strongest lineman in the mountains, helped the Black Bears to an 11-2 record.
âMichael grew up a lot between his sophomore and junior year and concentrated a lot in the weight room,â coach Tom Larkey said. âHe worked on his speed and his quickness. We depended on him a lot. I would say 80 percent of our running plays went behind him, and he would switch sides depending on our formation.â
Smith, a two-year starter, had 79 pancake blocks during his senior season and holds the school single-game record with 15 twice.
The first player from Harlan County ever selected to the first team, Smith bench-pressed 365 pounds and power cleaned over 300 twice in competitions. Harlan County is in its fourth year after a merger of Cumberland, Evarts and Cawood.
Smith is hearing from Union, Lindsey Wilson, the Cumberlands, Pikeville and other smaller schools.
