It may be a long way until March, but both of last season’s Ninth Region girls’ basketball finalists – Boone County and Newport Central Catholic - showed on Friday night just why they might meet there again this season.

Boone County built a 10-point halftime lead, fell behind by four early in the fourth quarter, then went on a decisive 12-0 run and finally had to hold on for a 50-47 victory at NewCath.

Both teams are trying to overcome some key graduation losses. But Boone County (5-1) still has the state’s leading candidate for Miss Basketball, senior forward Sydney Moss, who scored six straight points in the 12-0 run that wiped out a 40-36 deficit and left Boone County with a 48-40 lead with 1:39 left in the game.

“That’s what good teams do. They stay in the game the entire time and NCC’s a great team,” said Moss, who scored 21 points, seven below her average. “We let up a little bit defensively in the third quarter and it showed we need improvement on our defense, but it also showed we could make plays when it counts.”

NewCath (2-1), which lost its three starting guards from last year’s regional championship team, rallied to within 50-47 with 36.1 seconds left. The Thoroughbreds had a chance to get closer following a missed Boone County free throw with 23.9 seconds left, but sophomore forward Nicole Kiernan missed a short jumper in the lane with less than 10 seconds remaining.

“I told them before the game if we battle them I’m going to feel good about tonight,” said NewCath coach Ron Dawn. “It was good to see us come back, but then we got a little impatient and they turned the pressure up a little bit and we don’t handle it as well yet as we need to.”

Boone County coach Nell Fookes said the way the game played out was a good test for her team, which is looking to make up for the loss of its top two outside shooters from last season.

The Lady Rebels got most of their scoring from the frontcourt of Moss, senior center Zuri Hill, a transfer from Virginia and senior forward Lydia Nash. The trio combined to score 40 of Boone County’s 50 points, but Fookes said the play of junior point guard Jessica Jones was a key.

“It’s good for my team because we’ve had big enough leads where we haven’t done good things with the ball and we’ve been able to hold on, so we needed a scare like this,” said Fookes. “Tonight I thought Jones grew up a lot.”

Boone County used an 11-0 second-quarter run to wipe out a 13-10 deficit and built a 21-13 lead. The Lady Rebels then extended it to 27-17 at halftime.

NewCath kept chipping away at the deficit throughout the third quarter, when seniors Aubrey Muench and Alex Schalk each scored their only eight points of the game.

Muench tied the score at 35 with a three-pointer from the right wing and then Muench’s convential three-point play with 48 seconds left in the quarter put NewCath on top 38-36.

“We quit defending in the third quarter and he made a nice adjustment spreading us out, and they made some shots,” Fookes said.

NewCath built the lead to 40-36 just 33 seconds into the fourth quarter on a basket by senior guard Olivia Huber, but then it didn’t score for the next 6:01 as Boone County went on the 12-0 run.

“It’s such a great competitive game when we play them,” Fookes said. “We bring out the best in each other. He’ll do a great job with them and they’ll be leaps and bounds better as the season progresses and we will to.”

Moss also had 17 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocked shots and 3 steals in the game, one of those for a layup in the critical 12-0 fourth quarter run.

Typical Boone - New Cath game, hard fought, defensive struggle, always close regardless of any apparent talent difference, momentum swings; all the things that make for a tight, interesting game.

I told NCC Coach Dawn after the game he could put five 8th graders out there and it would be the same. He responded "What we need is for Moss to graduate....can you get her graduated and off to Florida for the second semester?!?!"

There was a Florida assistant coach at the game to check out how Moss was doing. He seemed well satisfied.
