Louisville Holy Cross hires Crumbacker
#1
The head-coach-in-waiting for nearly a year, Todd Crumbacker officially is the new leader of the Holy Cross High School football program.

Athletic director Jody Thornsberry announced Crumbacker’s hiring Wednesday. He replaces Mike Fletcher, who announced his retirement earlier this week after three seasons at the school.

Crumbacker, 26, is a 2004 graduate of Holy Cross and played football there for four seasons. A neck injury kept him from playing college football, and he graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 2009.

He’s spent the last three seasons coaching linebackers at Holy Cross and in February was asked to become the head coach once Fletcher retired.

“Once I graduated from Eastern, Holy Cross was the first place I went to and asked, ‘What can I do to give back to this community?’” Crumbacker said. “As a student, Holy Cross gave so much to me. It was always a goal of mine to come back to teach and coach.”

Holy Cross finished 11-2 this season, losing to Mayfield in a Class A regional final. Crumbacker said the Cougars will lose 16 seniors to graduation, including 10 who started on defense and nine on offense.

“We’re going to be young and inexperienced,” he said. “We’ll look to utilize our speed in different ways … and try to find clever ways to get them the ball in the open field.”

Fletcher went 28-10 in his three seasons at Holy Cross. He coached football for 38 years, including 19 as a head coach. He was the head coach at Fairdale (1984-91) and Valley (1993-2000) before heading to Holy Cross in 2001.

“It’s been tremendous,” said Fletcher, 63. “The people here have been great, and the kids have been very enjoyable. I’ve had no problems.”
