Pikeville College head coach Jerry Mynatt called a meeting today for the football team to let the players know that he was leaving the team for a better job opportunity. He is not leaving to coach another team, he informed the team that he turned down all job offers to coach at other schools, his leaving has nothing to do with football. I'll get back with everyone on his record while he was here.

well will they be able to replace him in time for next season

I heard before our meeting that that's what the meeting was about, so it didn't suprise me. Can't blame him though if he has a much better job waiting. I was glad to hear he wasn't leaving to coach somewhere else, that would have sucked. I heard he got a pharmacuetical job in Tennessee, don't hold me to that though. I wish coach Mynatt the very best. I hate it for him that he had to leave right as our program is on the rise, it had to be a hard decision as much as he loves the game and this team and players.

How will the Bears look next year?...do they return some good talent? I think this program has a chance to become very solid and get a pretty big fanbase...they need to get the good mountain kids to go to school at PC and it seems like they have been doing more of that the past 2 seasons. There is some good football talent in the mountains and Pikeville needs to take advantage of that and become a team that fans from all across EKY will get into Bear Football. I hope they bring in a good coach because the Bears played some good football last year.

Yeah, we got ALOT of good talent coming back. We lose SS Marsh (All-Confrence and All-American), CB Underwood (All-Conference, but his lil bro is better than him IMO, he redshirted this year), RB Joplin (All-Conference), OL Jesse Peck (All-Conference), LB Matt Brown, and CB Kelsey Baker. We got everyone else back and some. Got a couple good transfers and signees.

Congrats to the Coach.
Could there be any solid in house candidates?

I'd say Craeger would be the head man if any...he done a lot for the program while Mynatt was coaching. Not sure if they will clean house or not though...I hope they don't. Does anyone know if any players who had left the team might be coming back now due to conflicts with the former head coach???

Nothing against the man, but I know first hand of a lot of dirty things that he has done to local players in the past. I think it was good that he stepped down, a lot of trustees were upset because they were paying for kids out of state to go play there instead of the local kids. I would love to see Creager get it though, IMO I think he was actually the coach. He ran the majority of the practice, done the weights, and his attitude and love for the game would be suitable for any team to have.

NAIA allows football teams at most 25 scholarships, so that puts a hole in your argument.
And most of the local players you're talking about weren't going to be able to play at the Mid-South level anyway.

Jerry Mynatt stepped down
Saturday at PikevillePIKEVILLE, Ky. â In three short years at Pikeville College, Jerry Mynatt has accomplished a lot of things: Back-to-back winning seasons, seeing the program through the Elite Nine and on to the next generation of talent, and the first playoff appearance in the young programâs history.
Now he turned those things into a memory.
Mynatt, the winningest coach in Pikeville football history, resigned as head football coach at the NAIA school.
âCoach Mynatt and I had a very pleasant, very comfortable discussion today about our program and about his future,â said President Hal Smith. âHe assured me that he was at peace with his decision and was ready to step away from coaching for the time being. We wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors and thank him for his time and dedication to Pikeville College and our football program.â
In three seasons at Pikeville, Mynatt compiled a record of 19-12.
âPikeville College took a chance on me when I had no experience either as a head coach or a coordinator, and I truly appreciate that opportunity,â said Mynatt. âBeing a football coach is a very stressful and labor-intensive life, and while I enjoyed coaching football and being around these young men, I have been offered a great opportunity that I just canât turn down.â
Under his supervision, Pikeville College football has had its first back-to-back winning seasons; the Bears finished 7-3 this season after posting an 8-3 worksheet in 2004. He also has coached the second All-American at Pikeville in Antwan Marsh, the two-time Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Year, who followed punter Jeff Williams on the All-American list.
In addition, Mynatt coached the MSC East offensive player of the year in running back Calvin Joplin.
Mynatt was recently named co-coach of the year in the MSCâs East Division, an honor he shared with Georgetownâs Bill Cronin.
Under his leadership, Pikeville posted wins over every opponent it played with the exception of Georgetown.
On Nov. 19, the Bears made their first appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series, playing at No. 2 Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind. After trailing only 13-7 at the beginning of the fourth period, Pikeville lost 41-7.
The Bears were ranked 18th in the NAIA preseason poll this season. They moved up to 16th in the first poll of the regular season and never fell below that the rest of the season. They spent four weeks in the Top 10, peaking at No. 7 in the Oct. 17 rating.
The Bears finished 2004 ranked 23rd, the first time theyâd ever been ranked in the seasonâs final poll.
Candidates interested in the vacancy should send their resume packages to either Athletics Director Ron Damron or Assistant AD Rick Bentley at athletics@pc.edu or via mail at 147 Sycamore St., Pikeville, KY 41501.

No, actually Maui the 2 locals JKWON is talking about would have got ALOT of playing time this past year, one of em probably would have started the "Dog" position. Every local player that is on that team that didn't redshirt played this year and all did a hell of a job IMO.
02-13-2006, 03:37 AM
I know a lot of the local kids on that team that either left their past Mid-South program (Campbellsville, Georgetown, etc.) in order to play closer to home and were promised a larger ammount of scholarship money. Get your facts right before you think people are lying.

Got word today that there has already been 26 coaches applied for the job, one being former Pikeville High School coach and now Pike Central coach Chris MacNamme (spelling).
02-17-2006, 07:32 AM
I think someone from outside the current program will get the nod and then clean house. Just a gut feeling.
02-21-2006, 10:28 PM
Heard today that over 60, SIXTY coaches have applied for the head coaching job.
02-21-2006, 11:29 PM
got any names?

Derrick "Big Show" Silas - Played here 4 years, was one of nine players who started out with the first year team and finished with them. Was an assistant coach this past year.
John Kreager - Pikeville's defensive coordinator and assistant head coach the last 3 seasons, also the strength and conditioning coach. Was strength and conditioning coach at UNC a couple years. Has ALOT of coaching experience, coached Antwan Marsh and all the Anson County, NC players that play here, coached them in high school, coached at East Tennessee State. Nice resume.
Chris McNamee (sp) Former Pikeville High School head coach and now Pike Central head coach, alot of years experience in coaching.
Also "HEARD", don't quote me on this cause I'm for sure about this one, but "HEARD" that EKY high school legend Hillard Howard has also applied for the job, and everyone knows his coaching history. Don't hold me to this one though, just a rumor as of now.

I would LOVE to see Jim Matney get the job personally, me being a player and seeing what he has done with players and teams he has coached. He would be a perfect fit as the Bears head coach IMO, I would love to play for him.

I really hope to see Craeger get the job!
I've heard there are 250 applicants.

Pikeville college has contacted several high prfoile HS coache sin the area, I repeat Pikeville contacted them.
They want a different vibe to the program and want the riff raff gone, so don't look for anyone in house to get it, ESPECIALLY THE DC.
Whoever gets the job has some restrictions coming their way on who they can recruit.

I hope whoever gets the job they ask coach Kreager to stay and continue to run the defense. Without Kreager this team will be hurting, not only that, if Kreager leaves, ALOT of the returning skill players will leave also.
