Things I want to know about prison?
#1
Are there any questions that you have about prison?

Is there anything that you would like to know about it? Do you have any questions about the operation, inmates, programs or food? I will try to give you the best answer possible. Is there anything that you have ever wondered about regarding prison? I have 10 years of experience in this field and not as an inmate. Confusedecret:

why is it set up so that someone not in prision, that doesn't have a lot of money has to wonder where their next meal is coming from, but if they comitt a crime they get a roof over there head, a bed to sleep in, electricity, tv, and three hot meals a day?

Im in a Punishment & Corrections class right now, so I'm learning quite a bit, but if anything pops up I'll be sure to know who to ask :thumb:

I'm familiar with jails also.. and like BJ.. not from being an inmate lol

I'm with blackcat on that. Jails moreso than prisons house people that commit petty crimes to have a place to sleep and food and heat/air conditioning. They have it better than I do. They get to work out, play basketball, hang out with friends, watch television, eat good meals, sleep whenever, and they have no bills nor worries in the world...

There is a large misconception in America that jail is a pleasant place to be. Rarely does a correctional institution have inmates that want to be confined to a 15x15 room with 20-30 other men. By no stretch of the imagination is jail or prison a pleasurable place to be.

I will agree that there are too many repeat offenders but it is not due to the luxury inmates have in jail or prison.

:thumb: I agree, and tribe if you have it worse than inmates in prisons/jails then I'll have to call social services on your family because that would be a shame if criminals are eating better meals than you and getting better opportunities to do things Smile

They have some good food at the jail... especially the Rice Krispies Treats
#9
I'm not saying that I have it worse than them, it's just that some of them do it to have a place to go and yet I can point out 20 known drug dealers and nothing ever happens to them. The police are corrupt.
#10
I wouldn't say the police are corrupt.. they are working for either the city, county or state and usually do what they are told
#11
Some police are corrupt but VERY few... but it takes so much to actually bring drug dealers down...I could point on 20 as well, but at the same time know that at least half of them are going to get caught eventually...It's impossible to catch all the drug dealers in the world...

It's just that the BIG wigs high up on the police food chain are the ones that get the warnings to the dealers before they do a raid. They know when police are coming, hide stuff, don't get caught, they look good then and the police look good because they "tried" to catch them.

I actually don't know if it's for sure the big wigs that do that, because in one case recently I found out that it was a sherrifs deputy that called the people ahead to let them know...In very few cases do people get called ahead anyways because they aren't the true big time drug dealers, so it doesn't hurt the people high up in the community that have drug connections because of the small effect that it has on them...But within the last few months there have been MANY arrests in Pike County, it's just that we never hear about most of them...If few cases people get told ahead of time....

But all that is for another thread and another day...So I'll leave the rest of the thread for prison talk...:watch:

I agree that many feel this way about prison. There are government programs available for those individuals that are on the streets that are not available to the inmate population. One example is college grants. Inmates in my state must pay for the college classes that they receive. A person on the street would be able to get financial help. Yes they do get a roof over their head but in most cases it is in a very small cell with someone that you don’t like and have to live with. They pay for their own TV and the cable bill is also paid by the inmates with the profit from the commissary. The prison that I work in doesn’t provide AC for the inmate housing units; therefore, we can save some on the power bill. We have to have the power to run the place as safe as possible so we can continue to protect the public. Yes they are fed well, but they have very little choice in the food. They receive 3 meals a day during the week and two meals a day on the weekend and holidays. It is a larger meal like brunch for the morning meal on the weekend. That also is used to save money. I hope that helped with your question.

You must remember that most inmates start at the jail system and work their way in to the prison system. Most jails are more dangerous than some of the prison due to the large mix of people that have not been classified. Working out is a good thing as far as staff is concerned. If an inmate is working out or plays basketball he is doing something positive and not involving himself in the many negative activities that are available to him. When you talk about hanging out with friends you are also talking about hanging with individuals that have many bad things in mind for you also. They may not be your friend. The inmates at our institution due have medical co pays. I do agree that they don’t have the bills that we do on the street. Many are required to pay some child support while incarcerated and some are paying court cost. Many are not so worried about the free world but are worried about survival. Small, weak, and mentally challenged have a difficult time in prison and can become a victim of many bad events while completing their time. I hope this helps. chemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
