UPDATE 2:19 p.m.: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith jointly (and officially) announced the league's new collective bargaining agreement. "It's been a long time coming," said Goodell in front of an entourage of players and owners at union headquarters in Washington.
Entrenched in intensive back-and-forth negotiations for more than four months, both sides thanked and praised the other for their efforts with Colts C Jeff Saturday singling out Patriots owner Robert Kraft (and hugging him) for staying with talks despite the illness of his wife, Myra, who died last week from cancer but supported her husband's involvement throughout. Smith reiterated that the union must recertify now to put the final touches on the pact, including drug testing, pension benefits and player discipline; he indicated that would not be a stumbling block.
"We know what we did to frustrate our fans over the last several months -- they want football," Goodell said of the fans frustrated by the length of the lockout and whether there would be residual damage. "We are sorry for the frustration we put them through over the last six months."

Added Smith: "We worked hard to get a fair deal done."
