Mayfield Cardnials 2011
#1
Let the debating beging between the younger and older mayfield fans. Talk around town was of the debate about who the best team mayfied has ever let go of. The older folks seem to rember the teams of the 70's that carried a 31 game winning streak and a perfect season in 78. The younger fans still hold close in their minds the perfect 15-0 season of 2002. And now the team of 2011 surely has a case in that debate. The 15-0 season and 11 games at the mercey of a running clock are deffantly in the record books. All teams will cont. to be talked about for years, but now its time to look ahead to the 2012 season.

There’s a ton of talent across the state of Kentucky in the Junior class.
Perhaps the best prospect in the western portion of the state is Mayfield High School linebacker/running back Johnathan Jackson. The 6-foot, 195-pound Jackson is already hearing from Kentucky, East Carolina and Oregon among several other schools.

“He’s a leader and as a Junior that doesn’t happen very often,” Mayfield coach said. “We’ve had a lot of good players over the years at Mayfield. He’s up there at the tops, if not the top.”

Jackson ran for 71 yards and two touchdowns and had 8.5 tackles, including two sacks to help Mayfield to a 47-6 victory over Hazard in the Class A state title game in Dec.

On the season, Jackson led the Cardinals in tackles and rushed for 1,356 yards and 17 TDs. While he excels on both sides of the ball, Jackson said he “likes defense better” and projects at the Division I level as a linebacker.
Jackson said all the attention keeps him grounded. “It’s a lot of pressure,” Jackson said of the college attention. “I know I have to keep my head up always. You never know who is watching.”

Now on to the 2012 season.

The Cardinals will host 4 teams that they normaly dont ever see. Murray is a team of years past that play us from time to time, they should offer a good game since their recent playoff history and being ranked amongest the top of the 2a class for the past few years.
Russellville is also a team that mayfield normally does not play but has fell down into the 1a bracket and will become a contender for the district title.
Greenwood and Evansville Harrison are completly new to the Cardnails and no one here know much about them. "maybe someone can help to fill us in"

Mayfields bright future may start very dim due to the sting of losing such a talented senior class that will not be easy to overcome. But the Cardnails do have a solid core of youth returning in William Higginson, Jonathan Jackson, Dondre Jackson, Shane Ross, Macaiah Jackson, Labront Scott, Stuart Mills, Conner Tracy, to name a few. The Qb possision is left to the somewhat seasoned Jake Guhy, Luke Guhy's little and somewhat more advanced brother. Also making a trade for brothers is the kicker. Marc Wynstra's little bro, Luke Wynstra, will be filling his shoes.

And well of coarse there's always the next Devon Jones - The player that comes out from the middle of nowhere to make a big impact all season...

New qb and new line will have a few growing pains but I expect another run at the title next year. The younger Guhy at qb will see a challenger that transfered in to Mayfield from Georgia.

Having had a chance to see Mayfield on several occasions, my observation is they win not because of talent - which is good but not extraordinary - but more because of coaching which imparts great savvy and more importantly, brings about near flawless gameday execution. Mayfield wins because they execute better than the competition.
