Who, in your opinion, is the best actor and the best actress of today's generation? I have put some thought into this one, and I can't come up with any real solid answers. I few that have crossed my mind:
Sean Penn
Tim Robbins
Morgan Freeman
Tom Hanks? (maybe in the 90's)
Actresses? I have no clue.
What do you think?

Sean Penn is a Robert De Niro want a be... i could mope around in a movie better than he could..

If you are counting Morgan Freeman then you have to count Clint Eastwood and besides Morgan Freeman is a better narrator than an actor

I really think probably one of the best younger actors is Ed Norton - He was incredible in American History X.
Another older person from our generation that is good is James Gandolfini --- He makes the Soprano's

If that were true, I would be in Hollywood right now:bounce:
On a serious note, some of the better actors around these days in my opinion are, Nicholas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson(not holding Mace Windu against him), I like Vince Vaughn as well, he can play just about any role but has seemed to been typecast to the comedy genre here lately but he does it well, also Gene Hackman is a fine actor if you want to go back a few years and Billy Bob Thornton. As far as actresses go, probably Demi Moore(soley because of GI Jane) Scarlett Johannsen and Dakota Fanning.

People within our age range--which makes a guy like Gene Hackman that much more impressive. Another guy who fits that same type of cross-generaltional mold is Burt Reynolds. He went from a young Bandit, to a broke loser to Jack Horner in Boogie Nights-and played it perfectly.

here is a point though people like reynolds do get better with age and play different roles better or worse at different points of their careers ....
saturday night fever, staying alive, urban cowboy .... definately not masterpieces but were great box office draws
look who's talking 1-27 .... i will not comment
pulp fiction --- one of the best movies of all time.... ...
could he have played these roles at different points in his career ( not just because of the age factor) no way ....
think of how critical to picking parts your career is as an actor

Good point--the only thing that I don't agree with is the Urban Cowboy part. By far--one of John's BEST acting jobs. I mean really . . . Bud and Sissy!
And he almost acted like he knew how to dip. . . .
