Just the facts my friend. These coaches produce bigtime.
I realize life in the inner city is tough on kids, because majority of them see no discipline like you eluded too. But in that video, there is no excuse for treating a kid like that. Those coaches were nothing but trash! They don't deserve a job at any school in the country. You should never lay your hand on another persons child, especially at probably the most safest place for these kids to be... school property.
There are many different ways those coaches could have handled their coaching practices and discipline examples. None of theirs were acceptable at all.

These coaches produce bigtime. They produce because they have kids that have blazing speed and freak bodies. Their method of coaching is a JOKE! I played and have coached with coaches that cuss kids till a fly wouldn't land on them. The ones with good talent were successfull. The one's without the talent stunk. I've coached with guys that didn't talk like that and it's also depended on talent but I've seen them get more out of kids.
I've coached 12 years and one thing I started noticing at an early age is usually the coaches that just scream and cuss do so because they don't know how to adjust. They use the cussing as a defense mechanism instead of being a teacher.
End of the day more and more kids have no dad in their life. Their football coach is often the most important man in their life. That's a role most coaches I know take serious. They try to be a role model and prepare kids for life. Sometimes that's tough love sometimes it's telling them you love them. These guys are bums for role models!
The biggest thing is the physical side. That is a lawsuit waiting to happen in this day and time! It's wrong! No way around it!

Have a hard time believing Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, Bear Bryant, those guys I think would qualify as old school, would act or talk that way to kids. Even in today's world I can't see coaches talking to kids like that. As an official now I know why kids on the field drop the "f" bomb and coaches have the audacity to question officials on why we flag that. Terrible video, horrible coaching IMO.

You won't last a week!lol! Maybe everyone who is so offended by this should go down there and help you! Do you realize that it's a miracle that these coaches are able to get these thugs to even join the team. If you show weakness to a predator he will eat your guts out. These coaches are doing something that the rest of us aren't capable of doing. So I suggest we mind our own business and let them do their nearly impossible job.

I've won a state championship and been in a regional championship every 3 years since the 90's. I've also coached inner city kids that were gang bangers, selling drugs living in apartments by themselves with no parents etc. So maybe you should slow your roll!
The bottom line with kids is that if you go out of your way to show them how much you care about them, when you are willing to sacrifice for them and they know it, they are going to go to war for you! Doesn't matter if they are rich, poor, city or country! I've had them all and that rule holds true! Ironically it holds true in business, school administration etc. When you treat people with respect and they know you love them they are going to work hard for you!

Just posing a question. Towards the end of the video, when the coaches take Charles aside and explain what they did and why they did it, does that not matter? Or did you even get that far? Just wondering if it helps or not in your eyes. It at least gives an explanation in their defense.

Thats the only part of the video I approved of really! They did the right thing there by pulling him off to the side and explaining why they did what they did and then apologize and keep respect. I don't really blame the coach for what he did when you have a big superstar on the team and he thinks he is too good to practice as hard as the rest of the team you gotta burst his bubble and bring him back into reality and with the way he was acting, I think going the physical route was the only was to resolve it!

But the fact remains that these coachs are highly successful and what ever they do has produced championship results, so who are we to complain about it. If their tactics are so bad, let those with skin in the game put a stop to it. If it is so bad, why do the players stay? They stay because they respect their coaches in their own way. They know the coaches will lead them to glory on the field. How in the world can we complain with the proof right in front of us. It's a lot like going into basic training in the military. You are treated like the lowest scum for a few weeks. All you can think of is how much you'd like to shoot those rotten SOB's. But by the last couple of weeks you start to realize what it's all about and end up throwing a party and everybody pitches in to buy the drill instructors gifts of appreciation for turning them into men. I remember thinking that if the bullets start to fly, I want those guys to be by my side, leading the way.
