Wow, I thought Bellevue would be a little better this season. I truly thought they could compete in this game

Kozerskiâs Holy Cross Indians kicked off their season with a 33-19 road win at Bellevue. The scoreboard at Gilligan Stadium was not functioning after being struck by lightning recently but despite a determined effort by Bellevue, there was little doubt that Holy Cross was the team in control.

Senior quarterback Jerry Arlinghaus completed 12 of 24 passes for 150 yards, one touchdown and one interception while rushing for 56 more yards and another touchdown on 16 carries to lead Holy Cross.
âJerry has to play well,â said Kozerski. âIf your team is going to run the spread offense, your quarterback has to be successful whether heâs throwing it or if heâs running it and I thought Jerry led this team beautifully.â
Holy Cross has now won six of the last seven meetings between the schools.
While the scoreboard clock was out of order, Holy Crossâ team stats showed the Indians controlled the ball for 36 of the gameâs 48 minutes.
That included Holy Cross taking the first 20 offensive snaps of the game and 22 of 25 in the first quarter.
Despite that fact, Holy Cross led just 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Senior D.J. Slater stepped in front of one of the few mistakes Arlinghaus committed, a seam pass just inside the Bellevue 20-yard line, and returned it 82 yards for the first score of the game. The extra point was wide left but Bellevue was up 6-0.
The Indians answered with 13 straight points. Following Slaterâs interception return, Holy Cross put together a 14-play, 64-yard drive that senior Chad Fuller capped with a 6-yard touchdown run. It was the first of two touchdown runs for Fuller, who finished the game with 65 yards rushing on 14 carries. His younger brother Kyle added the extra point for a 7-6 lead.
Junior Eric Walker set himself up for Holy Crossâ next score with an interception and return to the Bellevue 23. Walker scored four plays later on a 9-yard run. The extra point was no good but Holy Crossâ lead was 13-6.
Bellevue was on the verge of giving the ball back to Holy Cross, facing a third-and-12 at its own 33, when quarterback Jake Sparks connected with wide receiver Brandon Fogleman for a 19-yard gain and first down.
Five plays later, the Tigers tied the score when Slater scored from 17 yards out and kicker Kaylynn Dill added the extra point.
Bellevue could muster just seven plays on its first three possessions of the second half, however, and Holy Cross took a two-score lead on an 11-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-down play from Arlinghaus to Josh Jasper in the third quarter and a 1-yard Arlinghaus run in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Dylan Huff had eight carries for 42 yards and another four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown with about 5:00 remaining to bring Bellevue within seven points, 26-19.
Chad Fullerâs second touchdown, from one yard out, put the game away late in the fourth five plays after he had muscled his way for a 2-yard gain that converted a fourth-and-1.
âOur kids competed hard and we fought back,â said first-year Bellevue coach Russ Shearer. âWhen youâre playing that many plays on defense in the first quarter, you donât expect to be sharp on offense⦠I canât be more proud of my guys. They played their butts off
