Practice and Heat Index
#1
Anyone missing practice due to the heat index? I like the guidelines, however, I think it is a disadvantage to those schools that start back early and don't have the ability to adjust their practice times.

Russell cancelled today

I think Lawrence County cancelled again today, I know the soccer team didn't practice. This really hurts not being able to practice yet another reason why I don't like school starting back this early. If your not in school you have the ability to practice in the morning or later at night.

Paducah Tilghman has been fortunate enough to have access to a remarkable indoor private sports complex. The heat down here is simply unbearable.

At least they didn't have to miss yet another practice session.

Couldnt they go inside a gym? I know you cant do everything you need to do in a gym, but you could at least work on your offense and defensive packages right?

According to the KHSAA if the index is over 104 and you have no air conditioning inside then you can't even practice in the gym. http://www.khsaa.org/sportsmedicine/heat...hartbw.pdf

Thats true, but even without air conditioning a gym isnt gonna be over 104 is it?
#9
If it is 104 outside then a gym would be 115 inside
#10
And its not the real temperature that has to be 104 it's the heat index which is the temperature combined with the humidity.

I could be wrong but the way I read it they are only talking about the outside index. So if it is over 104 outside and the gym doesn't have air conditioning then practice can't take place inside no matter what the temperature is inside. I'm not sure but that is how I understand the wording.

That is correct. Called KHSAA and they said once the outside heat index is over 104, you can not go inside unless it is air conditioned!

makes sense

The Gridorama at Middlesboro today was started 1 1/2 hrs late due to the heat index. At 6 it was 97 and 108 heat index. Middlesboro's scrimmage didnt end until 11pm on a school night.

Expect the same thing tomorrow night for Bell Co's Gridorama @ Knox Central.

Knox Central has a indoor practice facility which is huge as far as practice in the heat. Wish one day we could get that. If I am not mistaken isn't KNOX the only eastern Ky team to have a indoor practice facility?

Corbin has had one for a number of years. Opened it up in 2002 maybe???? Somewhere in that time frame.

Clay Co. has a new one that is either done now or will be done very soon.

It is good to hear coaches are following the guidelines on this. I spent years as an Army Officer where soldiers routinely were hosptialized for heat exhaustion at Ft. Benning, GA where heat and humidity were extreme. Young players are often not hydrated well anyway. Coaches honoring these rules prevent hospital visits at a minimum.
