Last year's Sweet Sixteen was missing a few favorites. And this year there will be teams as good if not better than SV that won't get there as well. Nothing is guaranteed to SV or any other team.
Only one example is needed to show that anything can happen from this point on. Scott County was a lock to win the state title this time last year according to the experts, but did not win the region. Their fate was sealed by injury. Others teams just had terrible games and found themselves watching the tournament instead.
Louisville Central began the season with a losing record but nearly won the title against Holmes. Not only do you need talent but you need to be playing your best basketball of the season beginning next week.

More Cowbell Wrote:Actually, the score was tied at the half of last year's regional title game. SV had been up by 11 in the second quarter, but Lawrence closed the period out on a big run to tie it at 25 going to the break.
But, your point is well-taken. Lawrence is still a good team, and no way do I think SV is really 40 points better than them. LC actually played Valley fairly even in the first quarter, with SV only leading by 2 after one. Valley really blew this one wide open in the second and third quarters, but I suspect some tired legs may have played a role in that. I don't think anyone would expect a similar result if the two met up again in the regional.
Bottom line, I do think that even if Lawrence is fully rested and the game is on a neutral floor, SV is still 15-20 points better. But that is a small enough cushion that if Valley plays a poor game and misses a lot of open looks, Lawrence is good enough to beat them. Hopefully if the rematch happens, SV will bring their "A" game to the floor and earn another trip to Rupp.
Great post. I think that it is an awesome thing that LC still held their end of the deal and came after playing the night before. Still LC fully rested would be like you said at least 15-20 points behind Valley playing their A game. I really cant wait to see what this regional tourney can bring to the table but unless some drastically changes, no team should really be able to hang for more than maybe a half. Valley D is way to much for the full game.
Does anyone know if the did anything for Elisha and Ashley regarding their jerseys or anything like that?

Up 45 nearing the end of the 4th and still have all 5 starters in... This SV team reminds me A LOT of the Boyd Co teams of years past from the 16th... Press most of the game, leave the starters in and run the score up every game... Boyd County is 2-19 on the season this year getting beat on average by, estimating here, 20+ per game. As they say... what goes around comes around...

I didn't realize that the game was over when one team is up by 17 at the half...
Did you really expect SV to just stop playing after that? In my mind, a 17 point lead at the half is not insurmountable, I've seen teams come back from much worse than that before. Valley did exactly what they should have done, which was to play their game and prepare for the post-season. And the way SV plays is to press all the time and force turnovers.
I think it's funny that this was supposedly the 2nd best team in the region, a potential challenger for the regional crown, and their fans are on here saying Valley should have let off the gas. My opinion, if you don't want the other team to play their best, schedule the game as a scrimmage so no one's feelings get hurt.

And to add to these thoughts, if they had let off the gas and won by 15-20, people would be coming out the woodworks saying, "See I told you so, they (SV) are not that good" (I've seen this type of post before). If they play their game and win by 30-40, people start complaining that Valley has ran up the score and say, "Shame on them for beating a team that bad".
No matter what Valley does, they will have critics, so they just need to keep their focus, play their game, and look toward tournament time, and ignore all the critics.

Of course they would have. That's just the way it goes when you are the overwhelming favorite. You either win going away and get criticized for being a bully, or you have a closer game and get called overrated. Like you said, either way you can't please everybody.
At least some other school will get to be the object of everyone's disdain next year...

I live in Johnson County kind sir so I have nothing to do with LC and have made no claims of being their fan. Just calling it like I see it, you are up by 45 at the end of the 4th and still playing your starters you are just trying to show yourself IMO.
I just call it like I see it... Like Boyd County... Valley will get theirs soon enough. Others would likely say the same, but don't like to be ridiculed for stating the obvious...

If you're saying that Shelby Valley will be on the other end of some 20-point blowouts next year, I agree with you. After losing 8 seniors, including all five starters, they will be in a full-on rebuilding mode.
Personally, I fully expect to see other teams around here exact some sort of revenge on Shelby Valley next year. Shoot, they haven't lost to another 15th region team the past two seasons, so I'm sure the line to "get their licks in" will be a mile long...
But I will guarantee you one thing, when it happens I won't get on here and complain about another team "running up the score" or something to that effect. It's basketball, and sometimes that's just the way the ball bounces.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk or anything... I was just stating the obvious... when your running up the score like Valley does game in and game out instead of trying to get playing time for your future players then that is going to come back to bite you in the *** big time.
