Sewell Hits Game Winner to Advance to Finals
18 Footer Gives Shamrocks Win Over Male
LEXINGTON, Ky. â Trinity Mr. Basketball candidate Josh Sewell nailed a three-point basket at the buzzer to break a 57-57 tie as Trinity beat Male 60-57 in the semifinals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic High Schoolâs Robert J. Bueter, S.J. Athletic Center.
Trinity overcame a 15-point second half deficit in the third quarter to get the win.
Trinity will face host Lexington Catholic in the finals of the tournament. It will be the first meeting between the Shamrocks and Knights since 1993, a game also decided on a buzzer beater. The game will be broadcast on Wazoo Sports with Qunicy Alexander (play-by-play) and Joe Burchell (color analyst). The game will be televised on Insight Lexington, Channel 524; Digital Channel WLEX 18.2; Insight Louisville, Channel 524; as well as Digital Channel WHAS 11.3.
A free throw by Charles Foster with 7:30 remaining in the third quarter tied the score at 45-45 after the Shamrocks had trailed by as many as 15 in the thid quarter.
The Shamrocks took their first lead of the game when Foster hit a basket with 6:56 remaining in the game, capping a 17-0 run for the Shamrocks.
Maleâs hot three-point shooting in the first half propelled the Bulldogs to a 35-22 lead after leading by as many as 15 points in the first half. The Bulldogs hit 7-of-9 attempts in the first half, including five from Kevin Glenn.
Sewell continued to climb up Trinityâs all-time leading scorers list. Sewell entered the game ranked seventh on the all-time list at 1,085 points. Sewell passed Greg Stitch (1,087) and Jeff Wilson (1,099) and is now fifth on the all-time list. The next milestone for Sewell to pass is Mike Purdyâs 1,145 points. Purdy ranks fourth on the all-time list. Lee Morrison leads the list with 1,317 points.
