Trinity Advances With 53-39 Win
Mr. Basketball Candidate Sewell Gets 19 Points in Victory
LEXINGTON, Ky. â Trinity held an opponent under the 40-point mark for the first time this season on their way to a 53-39 win over Scott in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic High Schoolâs Robert J. Bueter, S.J. Athletic Center.
Trinity will face Ft. Thomas Highlands in the quarterfinals on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
Trinity won for the seventh time in eight games overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic for the sixth time in seven tournament appearances. Last week, the Shamrocks won the Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic for the first time in program history.
After the Eagles cut Trinityâs lead to five at 31-26, the Shamrocks extended the lead to 13 by the end of the third quarter on their way to the win.
Mr. Basketball candidate Josh Sewell continued his rise on Trinityâs all-time scoring list. The senior entered the game ranked eighth on the charts at 1,054 points, but moved to seventh after scoring 19 points to increase his career total to 1,073. He passed Pat Dayâs 1,060 mark. He needs 14 points to tie Greg Stitch for sixth on the all-time list.
The Shamrocks started the game slow, falling behind 7-2 early after the Eagles superb passing found seams in the Trinity defense. The Shamrocks finally found an offensive groove in the finals minutes of the quarter, taking a 10-9 lead before a Kellen Smithâs three-pointer in the final seconds gave Scott a 12-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
Trinity finally found its groove in the second quarter, posting a 13-4 run to start the second quarter behind 10 points from Sewell, including consecutive three-point baskets by Sewell.
The Shamrocks escaped the first half with a 25-18 lead.
