What began as a two-man scoring assault for Villa Madonna evolved into a team-wide effort on both ends of the basketball court for Newport as the Wildcats rallied from an early deficit to rout the Blue Lightning 92-56 in the season opener for both teams.

Friday's contest showcased the skills of Villa Madonna point guard Blake Bryan, the state's scoring leader last season with an average of 30.2 points per game.

Bryan combined with long-range gunner David Schuh to help give Villa Madonna a 20-15 lead with less than a minute to go in the opening quarter. Bryan hit a pair of jumpers and five free throws in the period and Schuh nailed three 3-pointers as the seniors combined for all but two of the Blue Lightning's first-quarter points.

Newport scored the final four points of the opening quarter to tie it at 20. That began a 20-2 run that ended with the Wildcats holding a 35-22 lead with 5:01 to go in the second quarter.

Brandon Tucker hit a pair of treys and scored eight points and Anthony Luther had six points during the run, which was fueled by the defend-and-dish play of Newport newcomer senior Damarkco Foster.

Foster, an athletic, multi-skilled 6-foot-3 transfer from Woodward in Cincinnati, caused turnovers with his defense and fed the offense with his pin-point passing in the second quarter, which ended with Newport leading, 50-34.

"I told the guys before the game to share the ball, and we did," Newport coach Aric Russell said.

"I think the reason why Brandon was able to get so many points during that big run was because Damarkco was stealing the ball and being unselfish with it."

Newport's share-the-wealth philosophy on Friday landed four scorers in double figures, led by Casey McDaniel's 19 points. Tucker scored 17.
