McDonald's (MCD) has been able to thrive in this recession thanks to a focus on menu innovation, price conservation, and store renovation. But new efforts aimed at growing the restaurant base could put this all in jeopardy.
The company ended 2008 on a strong note. Fourth-quarter earnings came in at $0.87 per share, beating analyst estimates by four cents. Same-store sales increased 5% in the U.S. and 7.2% globally thanks to price increases (such as those taken on the beloved Dollar Menu). Net profit for the year increased 80% to $4.3 billion.
A significant investment of $2.1 billion is planned
