Though their records don't indicate it right now, look for both of these teams to put it together by Districts.

Don't see Maile in the line score for Covington Catholic, is he hurt?

I don't believe I've ever seen a record like that for Covington Catholic. They are really down this year, and I don't think it looks much better next year either.

Looks like he missed the game due to a Senior Retreat.

Jeramie Connor made four straight free throws in the final minute and the Newport Central Catholic boys' basketball team held off a late rally by Covington Catholic for a 47-38 win Friday night at NewCath.

The Colonels had cut the lead to 39-37 with 3:30 to play, but the Thoroughbreds countered with two straight buckets for a 43-37 lead.

CovCath could manage only a free throw by senior guard Alex Ives the rest of the way and NewCath snapped a two-game losing streak.

CovCath has lost two straight.

"We made some free throws," NewCath coach Grant Brannen said. "We had some seniors step up. Jeramie made some free throws, and that was a big thing. Free throws have been our woes down the stretch. I was proud of them the way they fought. We needed that win and I'm proud of the way we got it."

Covington Catholic, short-handed all season without starting point guard Mitch Shover, was without senior forward Luke Maile Friday. Maile was on a senior retreat.

"That's one of the most important things the school does," CovCath coach Mike Listerman said of the retreat. "I'm really supportive of that, and when it comes to it, I have to walk the walk. We tried to make the best of the situation."

Without Maile's presence down low, the Colonels still managed to keep the game close. CovCath had its last lead at 6-4 with three minutes to play in the first quarter but trailed by no more than 10 points throughout the game. NewCath took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Connor with 2:15 remaining in the first.

The Thoroughbreds' biggest lead came with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter when Matt Giesler's layup put the 'Breds ahead 26-16.

"It was a dogfight out there," Brannen said. "Give CovCath some credit. They played hard and threw some gimmick defenses at us and we were a little gun-shy at first, but we fought through. We've been through a lot of adversity this last week, losing two in a row. To come out and get a good win at home was nice."

Senior guard Grant Pangallo led NewCath with 11 points and Connor added eight points. Matt Giesler, a senior post player, scored seven and sophomore post player Jake Giesler added six points.

I heard Thelen was having a very good game until he got hurt. Cov Cath has just been devastated with injuries this year.
